I took a lady friend to the ER earlier this evening

...because she could not breathe...she suffers with COPD from 42 years of smoking. She quit smoking about 3 months ago. I stayed at the ER long enough to hear the doctor bluntly tell her that he did not expect her to live another two years. I think the doctor's beside manner needs some improvement. She is currently 60 years old and is on oxygen 24/7 and has been for several years. She is frequently in and out of the hospital. She was admitted to the hospital and may or may not be released tomorow.

The reason I am posting this is...if you smoke quit now.

PS. I took my friend who was building a frame for an outdoor sink to the ER after he cut his hand on a saw. I stuck around long enough for the doctor to fix him up and send him home. He is currenty 35 years old.

BTW...the doctor also told her that she should not return to her house without it being sanitized. According to him the smell of the cigarettes...the tar and nicotine on the walls...furniture and clothing (from years of smoking) all contribute to her difficulties in breathing. He said everything in the house should be sanitized. Does anyone have any suggestions about the best way to go about sanitizing the house?

That is some ER doctor.

Take everything out of the house that is porous and throw it away. Rip out all of the carpets and padding. Then scrub every surface and repaint with no VOC paint.
When your done with that cover the entire thing in a big bubble, and pump air into the bubble after it goes through several industrial scrubbers because nobody should chance that some other pollution may sneak in from sources in the air. After this is all done, of course you can never leave nor invite people over. So remember to be sealed in with plenty of sterile food.

Yes...it is a terrible addiction and some say it is just as difficult to quit a nicotine addiction as it is a heroin addiction. I have a friend that has not smoked for about 20 years and yet whenever he is around someone that is smoking he often says "Boy I sure would like to have one of those." He knows though...from past experience that if he smoked even one cigarette he would be back to the habit.

Although I have never heard a doctor say do not quit or start smoking again...I have known several instances where long time smokers...who did not show any real signs of health problems...quit smoking and suddenly health problems began to appear and a couple even died...so there may possibly be some truth in your post...but I personally suspect that quitting now is the best thing to do.
