It all depends on how the spam was sent. If they're big Russian spammers using stuff like botnets, header falsification, spam-friendly registrars, roundrobin DNS on compromised systems, reporting it isn't going to do much. The most effective thing to do these days is filter away.

what i find interesting is that the amount of spam actually decrease on special occasions such as holidays etc
this must mean that there is people behind the spamming, not just bots...
