You may not get the spammer, but you could go after the company paying the spammers...but don't expect making new friends this way.

It all depends on how the spam was sent. If they're big Russian spammers using stuff like botnets, header falsification, spam-friendly registrars, roundrobin DNS on compromised systems, reporting it isn't going to do much. The most effective thing to do these days is filter away.

what i find interesting is that the amount of spam actually decrease on special occasions such as holidays etc
this must mean that there is people behind the spamming, not just bots...
