1.5 MILLIONS people lost their homes in China due to the Olympics

Watching PBS about China. Back when China first started preparing for the games, the tore down complete neighborhoods. 1.5 Millions lost their homes. Wow.

WTF was anyone thinking giving the games to these people?

I hate that people get treated like this in the world. It pisses me off. There's just no humanity in China, at least among the government. If it doesn't benefit them, they don't care. I watched a homemade documentary that a Chinese man risked his life to film showing all kinds of squalor, kids having food stolen right out of their starving little hands, people being kicked out of homes, arrested for the tiniest of infractions because of extreme govt. paranoia, etc an it sickens me I wish the Chinese would have taken even just 10 percent of what they spent on the Olympics and put it toward their people.

Anyway, that's in a perfect world. I know I just wish

My parents went to china when they were giving notice to those people. They had a couple of days to pack their shit and get the fuck out. Police were patrolling and beating anyone who was littering or refusing to pack.

Good stuff.

Not to the tune of 1.5 million people......

An old girlfriend of mine had the city (or the state?) purchase their house from them to they could build a new on ramp to a freeway. It was some time ago on the 580 in Castro Valley, California. It was a win win situation for her folks. They got more than the house was worth, and then got to move away from the freeway to a better area.

Really? Care to show an example of a private company claiming eminent domain and taking someone's property?

As Rochard stated, the government might for a freeway, but they have always paid more than the property was worth in the instances I have heard of.

I almost bought my first house that way.

Also a side note to add. There was a case up North a few months ago, where a company wanted to build.

The land owner refused to sell and the courts made the owners give up their land due to "eminent domain." The reason was that the local community would benefit from the tax revenue they would receive from the new building.

i have a hard time believing >10% of the population of beijing was relocated to build 16 new facilities that have a total footprint measured in acres.

i checked www.pbs.org and could not find any truth to this either.

thanks for that link, i had come across that as well. i wonder how a western media agency like the mirror could validate such a number. certainly china did not volunteer that fact nor did the mirror count the displaced.

not taking sides with china at all, just saying.

Correct, a company can't claim eminent domain to my knowledge. The city ruiled the taxes generated by the company coming in would benefit the community. Thus, the poor dude had to sell out.

Like I said, I looked at some searches that were reporting this happening since at least early 2004. In the beginning (not sure about now), the Chinese never denied it. They only disputed the number.

I have my doubts that he suffered too much. Most of these holdouts are people that think they can milk them for just a little more. Like I said, every experience I am familiar with the offers were more than generous.

And no, I am not including the railroads buying their way across the country.

That is how eminent domain is abused. Govt claims eminent domain then hands it off to a private developer and gets a fat campaign contribution.

It's certainly not always a win/win. I know someone in the adult biz whose parents had their land sold to the government to expand the interstate for hardly any $$$. They are currently involved in a lawsuit but very few people can afford the kind of legal team they have. Lots of people are getting screwed up the ass w/o dinner in the US due to eminent domain.

No, they should give them fair market value. Which they did not. Ergo why they are suing But like I said, not everyone has money for attorneys.

Baddog,

Kelo v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469 (2005)[1], was a case decided by the Supreme Court of the United States involving the use of eminent domain to transfer land from one private owner to another to further economic development. The case arose from the condemnation by New London, Connecticut, of privately owned real property so that it could be used as part of a comprehensive redevelopment plan. The Court held in a 5-4 decision that the general benefits a community enjoyed from economic growth qualified such redevelopment plans as a permissible "public use" under the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment.

The decision was widely criticized by American politicians and the general public. Many members of the general public viewed the outcome as a gross violation of property rights and as a misinterpretation of the Fifth Amendment, the consequence of which would be to benefit large corporations at the expense of individual homeowners and local communities. Some in the legal profession construe the public's outrage as being directed not at the interpretation of legal principles involved in the case, but at the broad moral principles of the general outcome.[2]

If you are talking about China, don't put anything past them. Though what it sounded like is they forced them into some ghetto that was already over crowded.

Got a guy in China who does some translation stuff for me, he had to move and got compensated for his home being taken.

Love the way the western media has gotten so bold it is starting to make shit up (much like CNN being caught out the other day showing footage of Georgian troops claiming it was Russian troops doing the things they were doing). China has its funny ways, and has issues to deal with, but its interesting how the past 5 or so years the Anti-china campaign has really been ramped up by western countries. The Tibet thing for example was riddled with misinformation and just plain wrong reporting.

The new world order gave them the games. Not just 1.5 million, they also removed all homeless and other "trashy" people that could not be there when the tourists and athletes arrived.

If anyone doesn't believe in corrupt government, move to New Orleans.

I blink my eyes everyday and wonder if I live in the US, when I read the local news.

YES, its true... the government is not your friend.

i'm sure most countries have compulsory purchase orders, when the authorities need particular land. now if they didnb't get a fair price/ equivielnt rehousing then that's a different matter.
