An old girlfriend of mine had the city (or the state?) purchase their house from them to they could build a new on ramp to a freeway. It was some time ago on the 580 in Castro Valley, California. It was a win win situation for her folks. They got more than the house was worth, and then got to move away from the freeway to a better area.

It's certainly not always a win/win. I know someone in the adult biz whose parents had their land sold to the government to expand the interstate for hardly any $$$. They are currently involved in a lawsuit but very few people can afford the kind of legal team they have. Lots of people are getting screwed up the ass w/o dinner in the US due to eminent domain.
