(Reuters) - Georgia, where government forces fought pro-Russian separatists on Friday, is an energy highway to the West with two major pipelines routed via the capital Tbilisi.

Georgia and other transit states have an obligation to ensure the security of the pipelines, which follow similar routes and carry oil and gas from the Azeri section of the Caspian Sea.

From Tbilisi, the links head south into Turkey, away from the breakaway South Ossetia region, the scene of the fighting.

They are particularly valued by the European Union because they reduce dependency on Russian supplies and do not cross Russian territory.

But exports of gas and oil have been disrupted following a blast in Turkey earlier this week.

The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) claimed responsibility for the attack.

* THE BAKU-TBILISI-CEYHAN PIPELINE - The BP-led pipeline was opened in 2006.

It can pump up to one million bpd of Azeri crude along the 1,040 mile route to the Turkish port of Ceyhan. It is the first pipeline to carry large volumes of crude from the Caspian without going through Russia.

* The BAKU-TBILISI-ERZURUM PIPELINE - Also known as the Shakh-Deniz Pipeline, takes gas from the Shakh Deniz gasfield in the Caspian Sea to Erzurum in Turkey. It is jointly operated by BP and StatoilHydro. It began exports to Turkey in 2007 and will eventually be able to carry 20 billion cubic metres of gas.

I don't care where they are running through. I've asked from WHERE to WHERE. Please re-read my question.

P.S. Russian pipelines are running through many countries. Almost through all the EU. So what? Sorry I can't get your logic.

I don't know which country it starts in, but it runs to Turkey. It goes through Georgia. It's one of the biggest pipelines in the world and Russia was not happy about it.

For any person who has a brain it's not strange at all because Russian pension more than 10 times more than Georgian one. Also because South Ossetia already fight against Georgia in the past, but they never fight against Russia. I believe you won't understand me since you have no idea on the things you are trying to speak about. Go on.

Good. Now try to find out. Also try to answer me: why Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have a lot of resources (gas, oil etc), earn a REALLY BIG money and have no problem with Russia?

hint: They don't kill Russian citizens.

As far as I know, Gerogian "army" decided to run away when they realized that Russian army is going to protect Ossetian civilians.

Why do you care to give explanation? It is very simple, Russians should do that and thats it. No excuse , fake ones ,like Americans are doing on different sides of the world.(putting fake stories and incidents). Go ahead, it was time to do that long ago.

hmmm... georgian military attacked peace keepers and a russian base.. and russia responds and people act as if the soviet union just rolled into afghanistan and started stabbing babies.

if georgia hadn't been so focused on harboring chechen rebels, mercenaries and terrorists through the 90s and weren't intiating military agression, maybe they wouldn't be meeting with this sort of response from russia. what do you think is going to happen when you bomb a russian base and kill russian troops and peace keepers and your a little shithole of a country full of assholes who have little to offer the world?

My opinion is that Americans are too close to Russian borders. Drive them away,or everything will be like in Ex Yugoslavia. If Russia back down now, it is matter of time when west will continue to make problems and more problematic regions. This is time to drive them away.

Georgia is increasing their troop build up on the Azkhabia border and they have withdrawn 2000 troops from Iraq

Looks like they are going to declare war on Russia next. Mr. Saakashvili is a pshyco

Here’s your lesson in Russian/Georgian conflict history.
North Ossetia (NO) - Russian
South Ossetia (SO) - claims to be independent, but Georgians have claims to it.
So, 70% of SO have Russian citizenships, closely related to NO (not new Orleans, blacks live there) part. Ethnically wise, Georgians and Ossetians are completely different nations. They fought since God took his first dump and created Georgians (joking)..
So, last night Georgian forces take vicious assault on Ossetia’s capital pretty much leveling it to the ground with propelled rockets. Russian peacekeeping forces also become targets with casualties reported. Immediately after, militia all over Caucasus form their volunteer units to be sent to war zone. Russian tell Georgians to stop bombarding civilians.. Georgians continue their assault. 100's killed.. Russians deployed their forces into Ossetia, shut down one of their jets, kick Georgian ass all over the place.. Georgian president crying for help now.. That’s about it..
Now lets pretend Ossetia is Texas and Georgians are Mexicans trying to get it back. How you like that Cooter?

You know, it's much better to read that Ossetians say. The real truth can be found on their forums only. Google translator will help you: http://translate.google.com/translat...&sl=ru&tl= en - there are MANY pages so feel free to browse through the comments.

That's a bullshit :helpme All exUSSR countries have declared independence and almost all of the have good relationship with Russia. Especially those countries that have resources like Kazakhstan. According to your logic Russia has to "invade" them first but it haven't. Can you say why?

According to the NATO rules, the country can not be accepted if it has unresolved territory issues. That's why Georgia has decided to fix this "little problem" ASAP. Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel now?
