If you don't want to go too far from the states I heard Ensenada is nice.
San Felipe, but I'd rather go to Rocky Point than San Felipe, it's more "modern". Cabo is expensive, Puerto Vallarta was ok, beaches were dirty. Mazatlan was cool, nice beaches, and it is big. I go to Rocky Point a lot, my friend has a house down there... |

The answer is probably entirely dependent on what luxuries of life you consider required for comfortable living. Some people can't live without their air conditioning, and others don't like it when horses shit on the path.
There are jungle areas with their deadly scorpions and crazy birds, desert areas that are crazy dry and there are high mountain villages with cool breezes. There are resort towns that pack full of surfers during the high season and there are little villages where not even one person speaks english. Personally, I love living in open air homes and huts in tiny villages where there are only foot paths and no cars. I like flushing toilets, but cold water showers don't bother me. Also, there are differences like the east coast has crystal clear water whereas the west is full of more sediment, so if you like snorkelling and such, stick to the east. You should figure out a list of the things that you really need in a place, and then you have a better idea of where to start looking

I think you probably want to tell them to go somewhere larger then like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta... a city that isn't too huge (crime rate is lower then) that still has tourists, because it means there are better ammenities.
They might really like a village like Sayulita. There are still roads and cars, running water and toilets, warm showers, and it's a nice young crowd. It's located north of Puerto Vallarta. Have they ever lived anywhere like Mexico? If they haven't at least spent a good three or four weeks there, they will hopefully consider a long vacation first and then decide if they really want to buy. Living there is a LOT harder than just spending a week there on holiday. When I moved there, it took months just to get my phone line put in. Having an appointment somewhere doesn't really mean you'll get in that day to see anyone. Electronics oddly stop working for no reason at all (probably humidity problems). Bugs are really big. Water stops flowing. Power goes out. And getting an FM3 to live there can be a huge run around. Just some thoughts, just in case they are newer to this.

Well getting the internet won't be an issue if you stay in the cities as opposed to villages. I was stuck on dialup when I lived in a little village, and was lucky to even have that, as many people still didn't have phones. However, in Puerto Vallarta, there were plenty of broadband connections.
If they've never been to Mexico before, they REALLY really need to take a trip there and find out if they truly love it. Lots of people imagine palm trees, white sand, clear waters, and beautiful weather, and don't consider that it is still a very poor country with a lot of related problems. They should pick a couple of places that sound really interesting to them, learn as much as they can, and go on a vacation and find out what they think. The longer the vacation, the better.

I've heard all kinds of good things about Costa Rica. A lot of very beautiful places all over south america and central america too. There are beautiful places everywhere honestly, and many of them are fantastic to live in. I can't imagine choosing one place.

Monica pretty much summed it up. My advice, try to make as much connections as fast as you can. In Mexico it is without a doubt who you know. At least try to learn Spanish if you don't know it, and use it, they'll very much appreciate it and will go the extra mile for you.
If you are going to buy property, make sure the boundary is marked. From what I recall... Mazatlan: Beautiful beaches, not too humid, people were cool. Puerto Vallarta: Fucking humid as hell (it is a rain forest). Cabo:Arid, hotter than the other two. Kick ass fishing, scuba etc. Puerto Penasco: Weather is much like Phoenix, but a little cooler. Supposedly they want to build it up as the new Cancun. But Arizonans have been partying there for a long time |

Exception made of places like Ciudad Juarez and those close to US border, Mexico isn't really more or less dangerous than US, for one. Anf if you don't behave like a king-of-the-world know-it-all smart ass, you won't probably have any problem in 99% of Mexico, they love tourists dollars so they take care of them.Back to the question, I always had the dream to have a place in San Cristobal de las Casas (I'm not a beach person, I love mountains) but there are beautiful "by the sea" places like Salina Cruz or Puerto Escondido and small places close to Merida and Campeche. And I love Mexico DF, I lived and worked there back in my white collar corporate times and I use to go back once every 1 or 2 years, although now I spend a few days in DF and then head to the south, being Oaxaca Merida and San Cristobal my main places to go Out of Mexico, Costa Rica is absolutely cool and beautiful, and yes, a lot more safer than most countries in the world (and they don't even have an army, maybe that's why). And then in South America, depends on many factors. ie, if you like european style of living and excellent food (esp meat), the Argentina is your place. For cheaper and safer, I'd say Venezuela (don't believe everything FOX says, most of it is blatant lies, some of them quite ridiculous) although you better have a steel liver, food is hideous, they never heard about "fat free" meals. And "common" women are so-so, but if you have money and access to high class people, they've some of the hottest babes in the world. Brazil has very nice places, hot women and very sexual people, but it's a little more dangerous. Well, quite dangerous to be honest. But if you can deal with it, you'll have a great time. Chile has an appeal for US people since they try to imitate US in everything they can. IMHO, they are a quite boring country as well, exception made of the south. And the exact middle point between all that I guess must be Uruguay, being Montevideo the best option and Punta del Este a great option if you want more luxury and fun. The "don't even bother" places (IMHO): Guatemala (unless you like living an adventure every day), Peru (unless you like archeology), Bolivia (unless you like heights diseases), Ecuador (unless you like boredom) and Colombia (unless you dislike the fact of being alive. And guerrilla isn't even close to be the main cause of violent death there since they're in a regular to little zone with no tourism at all)

I used to live in Mexico City, but I moved to CA (safety reason) and the only thing I didn't liked was that it's way too crowded.
I visited Zacatecas, Aguas Calientes and Guadalajara and I really liked them for its colonial style and they're less crowded. |

yeah, I would'nt recommend Mexico unless you know "someone political".
All the beach areas are already "Americanized".. I hear Cabo is nice... Buenos Aires is good down in Buenos Aires, its surely a lot safer than Mexico..

I'll vote for Panama, but a year of 3 months here in the summer, 3 months in CR and 3 months in Mexico and 3 in the Caribbean would probably be the best.
