Who has been to Burning Man?

Were there vendors selling sodas and such on the fringe of the event or in the middle of it? or any at all?

Selling is a no no and not allowed. Well if I recall they do sell ice, but no other selling just barter. Oh and no logo's either.

This will be my 11th year.

No concessions of any kind. EXCEPT: coffee in center camp and ice sales.

Actually, no barter, either. Gifting only.

And there is no "fringe" of the event. You are either inside the gate and in the city, or outside the gate.

There is a small town outside the gate with a general store. But going in and out is a major deal, takes a couple hours and costs $20 or something.

You wouldn't want to go outside the gate unless you absolutely had to. It would be like putting on clothes, and going to the grocery store for supplies while a huge orgy was going on in your apartment. PAINFUL.

And ASM, the concept (and results) of "gifting" are more harder to explain than you;d think. So its an common mistake even among burners. I didn't really understand the difference between it and barter until my 4th burn. (and seeing the movie www.giftingit.com)

Obviously, its something dear to my heart.

OK - In NO WAY can I match the "level" of experience or fashion that Hal has had at Burning Man, but I will be making my sixth consecutive trip to the playa this year. People experience BMAN in their own way, which is the whole point. I love the experience of it and this year I'm participating in a bigger way than ever before.

This year's theme is "American Dream". And in keeping with that theme, as well as playing into the whole non-commercial aspect of BMAN, me and my friends are building a 4-story shopping mall in the desert where nothing is for sale. It's called Mal-Mart.

Our real-estate restrictions have forced us to re-design the structure, but it will look something like this:

The man burns in 22 days.

Renting the land, security, medical, insurance, clean up, and everything else associated with it from planning to setup. Then it is really important that everything is returned to normal when everyone leaves. I did hear the corporation was finally operating at a positive cash flow finally.

It is really a not for profit event and company. Just a whole shit load goes into it.

portable toilets

Radical self-reliance
Because of the event's harsh environment and remote location, participants are expected to be responsible for their own subsistence. Since the LLC forbids any commerce, with the exception of the items stated in Decommodification, participants must be prepared and bring their own supplies such as water, food, proper clothing and shelter, just to name a few.[33] Nothing is provided by the event with the exception of portable toilets.[34]

All of a sudden I really dig your style. Not that havent b4 but now you touched that place.

I havent been to "the burning man" but a dozen dead shows put together might give me a taste of what goes on there.

If you are going this year. I wanna go too

I'll try to make it ....

You can help support this years art installation
and maybe win a Cleworth print as well!

We are auctioning off a signed, numbered, limited edition print by Harold Cleworth.

The raffle drawing is this Friday, August 15th.

Value of the print is currently about $1,200.00

The image is of a 50's model Corvette in front of one of the original McDonald's restaurants in Hollywood, CA.
It's difficult to appreciate the detail of this hyper-realist painting but it is truly amazing.

Raffle tickets are $5 or you can get 5 for $20.
All proceeds benefit the Mal-Mart project for Burning Man 2008.

Help us realize our project and you might win the print!

More about Cleworth's work here: http://www.cleworthart.com/

That sounds like something intense to go to. Could any of you write entries in a journal and perhaps post some of the more interesting entries on GFY or on a personal blog online when you get back?

I'm pretty sure Hal posts something most years when he gets back.

I keep wanting to get out there, but from NC, it's problematic at best to ship the supplies. Maybe someday I'll be playa-bound, but in the meantime, I make do with Mysteria. ^.^

People come from all over the world.

Two years ago, the largest installation there, Ukronia, was built by 100 people from Belgium.

You could fly into Reno, buy your gear and supplies there, rent a car and drive in. Not a bad way to go.

I've been, and no. No vendors. There are a few piss stop style gas stations and such on the road up, about an hour from the event. That's as close as you'll get to 'convenience'.

This event is not about convenience. Its about experience.

I have videos, pics, and essays from the last 10 years at

http://www.lustmonkey.com

As far as battery charging. Some people use inverters with cars. My camp has 4 gas generators (and a BOOMING sound system, projected videos, and a rotating bar)

The man burns in 22 days.

.
That looks so awesome!!!

The event is such a supportive creative vibe that I find myself COMPELLED to be artistic.

As the event gets closer, my house becomes a whirlwind of fur, glue-guns, sewing machines, scraps, found treasure and more.

I just finished these:

As far as battery charging. Some people use inverters with cars. My camp has 4 gas generators (and a BOOMING sound system, projected videos, and a rotating bar)

Hal! That bar is sweet!!!

Where is your camp this year? Mal-Mart will be at 7:30 and Atlante.

I've been 7 times in the past 11 years. It was the first big splurge I did with my ill-gotten porn moola, in fact, back in 1997. ;D

If you ever get to go, it's SO worth it... A baby means no Black Rock for me this year (or last, as I was WAY preggers), but I'll be back home to BRC and my village, Gigsville, next year!

I've done both the flying into Reno and buying stuff there method twice and I've done it driving from Texas with all my gear 5 times. A lot of folks I know go all-in on renting one big truck to tote everyone's gear, and then only 1-2 people have to make the drive. Others ship their gear to Reno freight mail and then pick it up when they get there.

The thing that Rand mentioned, Ukronia (aka the Belgian Waffle), was an awesome installation. It was HUGE, and no matter where you were in the city, it looked it it was "just right over there".

Suffice it to say, it was a bit of a hike to get there, though. hehehe
