Anyone here have satellite internet, from a provider like Earthlink etc? I can't fucking handle this shotgunned 56k anymore, it is too goddamn slow and I would be 10x more productive with ANY type of broadband, but satellite is all I can get here and I cant justify buying an office in town yet (we live in the country).

Anyone have any experiences with satellite internet? Upload/download speeds? (IN Kilobytes).

Well it would still beat the fuck out of my 6k up / 11k down im getting by bonding 2 56k modems together =/

Satelitte high-speed internet connection is very good. I mean, it can't be worst than your 56k connection. It's comparable to a DSL connection.

But if you are a gamer and expect to play faster, forget it. You will have extreme high pings. Like 1000-2000 ms.

i'd check ur other options if there are any cable etc

dsl searches and all dat A&T dsl is nice

where do you live? if your in the u.s. I highly recommend AT&T cable....great service, although they have been slowly raising the price on me on a bi monthly basis. $45 a month now, still a great deal though

Its not possible to get anything else out here, I live 15 miles out of the city boundaries and am 11 miles too far away to get dsl, and there are no cable lines out here.

I can imagine satellite connections arent the greatest, just trying to decide if it would be worth it saving me upload/download time, wouldnt really be used for anything aside from that.

Latency times for satelite internet are 250ms up and 250ms down
At least for Astra any other can't be too much of a difference.
In exchange for latency times the MTU (packet size) of TCP
packets is a lot higher....so each packet is bigger is size and
contains more data.....

So it can be very fast only the resonse time is higher......so you
have an initial delay before the stream of packets is getting
transported....

Good Sat connections have a latency time of 550ms I guess the
cheap solutions will have higher latency response times....but I
have worked with sat connections that constantly were around
550ms.

Ya thats what I thought, but I remember hearing some things about DirecPC satellite service (which poweres almost all the satellite providers including earthlink and AOL) and how they claim 128k upload but in all relaity people are getting worse then 56k upload speeds most of the time (on 2 way satellite), how the Fair Access Policy smacks you down when it shouldn't, etc.

Does anyone here actually have satellite internet? DirecPC or Starband? Just curious to get the opinions from someone on the biz before i waste $$ on their outrageous setup fees.

Oh and sat connections can go up to a few 100 Mbit/sec but again
these are not the really cheap ones.....I have seen 2Mbit/sec
downstream and 256Kbit/sec for reasonable prices....

You could also check for Microwave Connections this is based on
radio frequencies and used a lot in remote areas...and can be very efficient aswell....this is the same technology as mobile phones use.

Only microwave here stopped servicing our area (sprint) and the other options for microwave are just outrageously priced.

What companies are offering 2mbit/256k up for a reasonable price? I can only find information on Stardband and DirecPC satellite here in the states, but it looks like you are in Spain so you probably have totally different options over there.

It's not bad at all, in fact until i got cable i used satellite @ my old crib just outside of Atlanta.

I've still got the satellite & broadband modems, payed $1k for it, (service is provided by pegasus not directv) im letting it go for 200$ + shipping.

Service is 60$ a month...lemme know if you want it.

Astra is a name for a range satelites I know for sure that Astra 2
is handling internet connections.....most providers have their
links through this satelite.

I know that the for the east coast all connections go through
The Teleport center in Washington from here all data goes up
and comes down from the sat.

I've got Satellite access here in Australia, 56k up and 400k down and its not much more expensive than a dial up each month.
I agree with DynaSpain on the latency issue.

I generally see a 1/2 to 1 second delay when I click on a link but then the pages load real fast, so that more than makes up for the delay. Generally I'm very happy with my setup and very rarely experience drop outs on a 90 cm dish (Ive seen it loose signal probably twice this year and for only about 10 mins each time during very heavy rain).

Also downloads tend to be more stable and dont slow down like you see a lot of times on a dial up.

I'd recommend you check out the internet access newsgroups for your area to get some real feedback on particular isp's thats how I choose my sat. ISP, there were heaps of complaints about the others around my area.

You can ask Cable and Wireless they are 1 of the ISP's I know
that have/control Sat connections but I'm sure there are more.

It fast as far as bandwidth...but it has latency (800ms minimum each direction) which blows...

...Move to BC, Get Fiber.

I have it. DirectPC thru Earthlink. It is better than dialup and if you don't have access to cable or dsl it's a must.

Severe thunderstorms fuck you up and it does have a little lag at first.

On average up/download speed is around 8KB's/150KB's
On off peak hours you can hit 15KB's up and 400KB's down.

And I can relay all my email accts thru my dish connection.

I have a question, on the Earthlink site it mentions they will send the equipment to you and you are responsible for install / setup costs, yet they have a $199 setup fee? Do they arrange someone to come out and install it for you or do you have to handle that BS yourself?

You can buy it outright or pay $99 install fee and $99/month for a year (to pay off the equipment) and then $59.99/month.

Download speeds are AWESOME compared to my old dialup and as far as upload speeds, not as good as they say they should be but I love this connection compared to my dialup!

They have an installer call you and the only money you need up front is the $99 for the install and $59.99 for the first month of service.

The First installer wanted to charge me $700 for a communications tower, I called and complained and they sent a new installer that help cut a few trees and put it up for the $99 install fee.

Here a link to the board where these subscribers hang out. If you get the 2-way system, no need for a phoneline.

They handle it. Almost 2 years ago when I got mine. I paid Earthlink all of it and then nearest local dealer comes out and installs it.

or you can call local dealer and buy everything from them as well

i think you can buy them at BestBuy as well and arange instalation thru them.

there are several different ways

It's not instant lag free like dsl but it beats the hell out of dialup. (however on large downloads like huge movies and such you will most likely smoke the hell out of most of the cheaper dsl services. The downfalls show when you switch frome page to page or say uploading many small files via ftp. (so much lag between opening each new data connection)

I have Starband Satellite at my Lake Tahoe house, it's works great and about 1mbps down, and pretty good up too. The weird thing is the latentcy, it's takes almost a second round trip from the satellite from my house, so every click, you've gotta wait a second. It's a little frustrating, but after the second, the page is fast!

Having a connection that doesn't have shit latency would be nice too, UT2K3 4 life.

I have a customer who switched from starband (too much latency to do vpn effectively) to direcway business edition. Seems to handle occassional VPN much better. The tech support blows ass though, so pray you don't need it.

The BE is 90 a month, the install fee is high - you get a 30 day trial period - if you don't like it, they will refund all but $200 installer fee.
