Amazing how this went from "what sort of music do you listen to" and then turned into a thread about Eminem

Anyway...to address the original question, I prefer classic rock, and absolutely love the blues! (oh...and I do listen to some Eminem just to piss off my oldest boy, who states "You can't like the same music I do!!! It's just not right!")

Being a guitar player, Hendrix and Stevie Ray are my music heroes

Classic rock is very broad. Give us some expamples!
I've got a pretty large vinyl collection full of rock from the 60's and 70's. Bunch of blues too.

You guys go too far.

It's one thing to point out that Eminem is more of a commercial success than an artistic one - whatever that means - but I can understand the point.

Unless you're listening to classical or jazz music though, the chances that you are listening to anything requiring any more "talent" is pretty slim.

For example, to learn to play what Labret listens to would be extremely simple compared to writing an 8 part classical piece. I don't see any additional complexity in what he listens to over any pop music of the day; maybe a little - but the difference between it and Eminem is MUCH SMALLER than the difference between Eminem and Beethoven.

There are different kinds of music?

Hmmm...Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Black Sabboth, Pink Floyd...just some of my faves (and their more obsure stuff...not the stuff you hear played on the radio every day)

Any music that is "interesting" is good to listen to. I like to hear things I don't expect when listening to a song..

Heh, reckon you'd feel at home amoungst my records. Got a couple of Uriah Heep albums, some Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, The Eagles, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Iron Butterfly (the In-a-gadda-da-vida record), ol' stuff like that.

hahaha, Jamie... I've been around music all my life, I started guitar 8 years ago, drums 4 years ago and I've been in bands for a long time. And no I'm not some metal head, i believe there is no wrong when it comes to music... however i believe that there is obviously less talent, and more talent. and EMINEM may be able to come up with witty lyrics, sooooo fucking what. bigggg fucking deal, i'm sure if i sat around long enough I could make some witty (ignorant, arrogant, annoying) lyrics too. and please, don't say hes a revolution of this GENERATION, cause if that were ever true i'd end up shooting myself, yes, literally. i hate the guy, everything he does is negative, he whines, he whines, and oh, and he WHINES some more. good values to promote for our GENERATION eh? most of the kids I see who like him, are these lil skinny scrubby kids who have a need to create a self image of dominance because they can't get it in real life, hence they listen to his music. its sad. so if you like a guy who loves to whine and THINKS hes some sort of badass, that says a lot about you ;P

Well, if we would start applying utilitarianism to music, and this Eminem guy, I think it's obvious that Eminem is contributing more to the society than an unknown viking metal band.

What I mean is that Eminem is giving "pleasure" to a huge number of people

I don't personally favor utilitarianism but I would still understand if someone thinks that popular equals good, if his point is that popular music, artist, piece of art, whatever, is giving a lot of pleasure to a huge amount of people

Haha. I like that. Especially the "unknown viking metal band" part. Don't hear that phrase everyday.

you can NOT base talent on a musician's popularity. sure, 9 times outta 10 someone famous will be more talented opposed to someone who isn't famous, however it is sick because look at the average listener of eminem, i'm tellin you, most of those people aren't exactly scholars. and look at society, filled with a bunch of fucking idiots, hah - n' look at the average fan of eminem. he caters to a very large portion of society ;P musically talented? i don't really think so, its just the image hes able to promote (perhaps that is talent) which entices alot of shallow people.

All excellent choices, LBBV! I'll just add a few... old Springsteen (pre The River old), Jethro Tull, Mountain, Rainbow, Blackfoot, Bad Company, Foghat, The Stones, AC/DC, etc.

I love the blues as well, but also have a fondness for fusion... Spyro Gyra, Shadowfax, Lee Ritenour, The Dixie Dregs (I think they're just The Dregs now, though).

I've recently started listening to some newer stuff, too (Creed, Nickleback, etc.), and I attribute most of that to having a teenager in the house (no rap or Britney here... my kid thinks Nugent and The Guess Who are the bomb!!).

To answer the question, I listen to whatever strikes me as the thing to listen to at the time... couldn't really classify my preferences by mood, I don't think
