1440x1080 means you need to hire a new editor. HD is 1280x720 or 1920x1080px.

there is 720P, 1080i & 1080p
1440x1080 = 1080i (HDV)
1920x1080 = 1080p (Full HD)

Thats not quite right. We shoot 1080i HDV and its 1920x1080

"I" means interlaced, and "P" means progressive.

Our camera records at 1440x1080 however when you capture it interpolates to 1920x1080. If you are using a hard drive HDV camera and just pulling it off the hard drive onto your computer hard drive it will probably stay at 1440. If you capture it via firewire it should probably be 1920x1080.

It doesn't undermine the quality of your video any. Its just a confusing deal for most people.

Sticky... add to that it has to do with the camera's pixel aspect ratio. A camera may shoot in 1440x1080, but it can render at 1920x1080 in a video editor because it's pixels are not square, but rather rectangular. I know the Canon A1 captures at 1440x1080.

When I shot with a Panasonic HVX200 a few months ago, it's actual capture is 1280x1080, which is really kind of fucked up, right? Additionally, it achieves this feat on 3 offset 960x540 chips (or at least that's what all the reading I found says.... Panasonic never really gives the specs out that I could find). But, when all is said and done and I bring it in to FCP and render it, it's true 16:9 at 1920x1080. Confused the hell out of me and I had to do more reading to understand the whole rectangular pixel thing.

HD is defined as video delivered at 720P or 1080 (interlaced or progressive). Most people assume that HD automatically means 1080.

Yup its some confusing shit, and hard to get a nailed down answer since it varies per camera. We shoot with the xha1 and the HV10 for pov stuff. Love both of the cameras, and I have to mark the footage when I capture so I know which cam is which lol. As long as the lighting is good you can't tell the difference. The Xha1 kicks ass in lower light though.

That's cool you use the HV10.... I hate mine... I use it for stealthy public stuff and while in the car... I hate that it's a vertical body when in the car; makes it impossible for it to sit on the dash at all.

I am looking at the new Panasonic HPX170 in September... see if it's all it's cracked up to be.

Yeha it's just about the Pixel aspect Ratio if you multiply 1440 X 1.33 you get 1920. But the edited video should be 1920 X 1080 or 1280 X 720, to the best of my understanding.

I like the Hv10 too cause it will fit in my pocket if Im wearing looser pants hehe. I have a stabilizer I use with it for pov. Its hard to hand hold it and get a nice steady shot, but after some practice its possible. Just because it is so small.
