it is soda here. When I was in the south the store clerk asked me if "I would like my pop in a sack" I said, 'that would hurt wouldn't it?"

Softdrink or Coke refers to carbonated beverages in general here in the South.

As for the inbred comment, the highest incidence of incest in the US happens in the North West. I guess you get your information the same place most people do, fictional movies.

When I lived in New York it was always soda.

Once I moved to Ohio everyone called it pop. I thought that shit was retarded and had no idea what anyone was talking about at first...

But now I say pop...

Where I was raised it is soda. My parents were actually introduced to each other because when they went to college in Western Pennsylvania after having been raised in Eastern Pennsylvania they were the only two people a common friend knew that said 'soda' instead of 'pop'.

Since moving to the UK I have to giggle because they tend to be called 'fizzy drinks' which is just overly cute.

Soda is 'soda water'
Soft Drink is what we call it here.
Coke is a brand of soft drink.

Xerox is a brand of electronic equipment. Photocopier is a machine that photocopies.

Hoover is a brand of electronic equipment. Vacuum cleaner is a machine that cleans carpets.

Neither. It's "coke" here. When someone asks for a coke, you have to say, "Coke coke?" TO signify that they wanted a real coke and not a pepsi coke or 7-up coke.

You dont feel stupid asking for a coke coke or a pepsi coke?

Do you call any other products by a brand name instead of the general name for them?

I don't understand how people refer to pop as "Coke", that's a specific brand, isn't that confusing going to a restaraunt and say you want some Coke, do they ask you "what kind of Coke would you like ?"

Well to be honest about most in the south ask for what they want, you want a coke ask for a coke, you want a 7 up ask for a 7 up. This soda and pop stuff is non-sense

how is that different then asking for a soda and then being asked what kind of soda do you want?

You refer to them in general as soda's. For instance i tell my wife to pick up some sodas from the store, she knows i like dr pepper and mountian dew so she will get those or i just tell her to buy dr pepper or mountian dew. Now if i just said can you pick up some cokes, guess what she would bring home.

When im in a resturant and they ask what would you like to drink i usually say what kind of sodas do you have or what kind of soft drinks do you have. They usually reply with a list of differnent soda names or they just say coke products or pepsi products.

If you go to a resturant here and say you want a coke dr pepper they will either bring them both or maybe mix them up in a single drink. But i bet they will just say huh did you want a coke or a dr pepper?

Well, what's your terminology for all brands in general. Like say you walked into a restaraunt and wanted to know what brand of refreshments they have, do you say "What kind of pop do you have ??".

When I go into a restaraunt, I don't say "Give me a pop", then say what kind I want. abshard hit it in the head above when he said it's a "general" term.

Where I live it's all in the category of "soda". So if you were here and asked for "a coke" you will get a standard Coca Cola. They might ask "is Pepsi ok?" if they are a pepsico supplied restaurant. If you wanted an orange flavored carbonated beverage, you'd ask for an "orange soda".

That's just it, most sane people don't ask a waitress for "a soda", they order the specific brand they want. "I'll have a 7-up please" etc.

Most people I know only refer to it as "pop" when talking about it in general, or asking a kid if they want some pop, or "I have to pick up some pop at the store", etc.

Growing up in Washington it was pop, when I moved to Texas it was soda or coke so I chose soda after I got sick of people making fun of me for saying pop. Now that I am back in Washington I still say soda.

I think I addressed this in my first statement, be specific and ask for what you want, and after thinking about it the last time I heard "soda or pop" was when I was child many years ago visiting one of my grandparents, honestly do people still use those terms?

I've never heard anyone under the age of 50 ever use the term POP or SODA..

Everyone calls the POP or SODA by it's brand name...

"I gotta get me a Coke!, These pretzels are making me thirsty!"
