Calls when I'm out with someone don't bother me when I know it's important. I spend time with Kathi from National Net. Now, you KNOW when Sweet T calls her, she better answer that phone, lol. But if she looks and sees it's not important, it goes to voice mail.
My sister is job hunting so again, if I'm with her and the phone rings, I expect her to answer it and I expect her to talk. No biggie. Honestly I can't remember a time I was out with anyone who took a call that wasn't important. I know I haven't. And I know I would just get up and walk out of wherever I was if someone partook in a personal conversation while I was with them. I was more insulted when I was at my brother's a few weeks ago for dinner and my SIL took a call from their real estate agent and talked for an hour! I had plans afterwards and she got off and I said "Gotta go" and not only did she get pissy at me for leaving w/o spending much time with her THEN, she mentioned it AGAIN when I said I said had plans after another dinner with them "I really don't like you planning things after you leave here - it gives us less time to spend with you.". Well, don't sit on the phone for an hour with your RE agent ;) |

Important? Sorry, I again have to refer to what people did before the damn cell phone came along.
The problem is that when you leave your phone on, ANYONE can call you, and isn't what you are doing at the moment "important" too? Ringer off, and let it go to voice mail, and then check it when you get up to go to the bathroom if you have to. Peachy, your sis in law is a prime example of the self-centeredness I've been talking about. Bravo to you for leaving.

No, I don't like it but it's only a ringtone.
My phone is almost always in silent mode.

What's funnier is when you have a group of people with the same factory issued ringtone. I spent a week with 9 other girls at the beach (all platonic - sorry for those of you savoring the idea of 10 47 year olds playing naked) and at least half of us had the same ringtone - the Blackberry ATT one - and we'd run around trying to figure out whose phone it was ;)
Speaking of the days before cell phones - when my brother was 9 and I was 13, he fell and split his chin open on the fireplace hearth. 911 didn't even exist then - though we DID have phones, honest. A neighbor's maid had to drive us to the hospital. He sat there for several hours holding rags under his bleeding chin before the hospital could get in touch with one of my parents (my mother was shopping, my father at a long lunch meeting) to get permission to start sewing him up. So things weren't so great before the days of cell phones and you can bet your ass both of my parents would have taken that call if they'd had a cell. |

Its not like deal-breaker in a date or something, but it sure does affect the opinion in some way, like anything else including dress, hairstyle, perfume, likes/dislikes.

There was a guy in my office that had "sweet child of mine" as a ringtone that was a total suit ... completely uptight.
The amount of shit we gave him for having such a gay ass ring tone had him change it to just the standard tone. I just leave my blackberry on vibrate as its either on my desk or in my belt holder. Getting 50+ daily calls on biz days make a ring tone a test of your sanity. - H |

I think it can tell you about someone if it's a certain type of music, chances are they like that type of music.
Personally, I have my cell phone with me maybe 1% of the times I go out and can't even remember the tone (I think it's the Thundercats theme). I cannot stand anyone who is out and talking on a cell phone or texting non-stop and I will publicly get angry at them, yell at them, walk away, walk off from a dinner, etc...

If I ever hear a custom ring tone that isn't annoying I'll let you know.
It's a phone. When it rings someone will soon be shouting into it so that everyone within 10 or more feet can hear the conversation. Why start off the event by making people listen to your silly song on a really bad speaker?

I do agree about the phone etiquette thing. I am always getting grief from my friends for not having my phone on or not answering at times and those are usually times when I am at a checkout or actually in front of another person. I just find it rude to have the phone be more important. Not just cell phones either..if I am in a shop and I am talking to the counter person and the phone rings and they stop to answer and then deal with that person it ticks me off a bit because I am an actual customer right there in their face ready to spend.
