What the fuck is with all these web hosting companies claiming they have network capacity that they don't? Just because you have an OC-48 mux in the basement does not make your OC-3 with a 75Mbps commitment a fucking OC-48.

Fuck, I mean, if you're on Cogent, don't even bother replying to this fucking thread, you probably can't anyway, with the fucking every-other-day-100000000ms-latency.

And if no one has told you fucks already, copying your upstream's network map onto your page is not cool. Nor does their network essentially/basically/whatever-other-fucking-adjective-you-desperate-sales-fucks-use become yours.

Motherfucking BGP does not provide load balancing, if you fucks understood the BGP selection algorithm, http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/459/25.shtml, you'd understand how a couple of attributes fed from your upstream can royally fuck up your day.

most hosting companys post what the Datacenter they are in has

Me at the Datacenter im moving into i will have a oc3 at least a line that is capable of 155 megs. I probally wont use all that but. Now the Datacenter has multiple Oc148's From 10-12 different Providers including Cogent , Internap, Cable & wireless, Worldcom, and some others.

Not all these hosting companys have the lines them selves they just resell for people that do.

multiple Oc-48's from cogent? Hows that possible since cogent only sells ethernet service in 100 or 1000mbps form. Internap doesn't even have close to enough capacity to handle an OC-48 to *anywhere* , only C&W and worldcom can deliver oc-48's on your list above.

Yes you dumb fuck, when equal paths are involved, Cisco uses their own route selection mechanism/load balancing, BGP itself does shit, it just redistributes routes.

And no one was talking about filtering routes, I specifically said attributes, shit like local-preference, metric, weight, as-path, and other things your dumb ass has no fucking clue about.

You're correct in that BGP itself does not provide load ballancing. I was trying to point out a document explaining a potential solution.

I hear ya man....

Some of the reasons we built out our own data center...

1. We control ALL aspects of our hosting (where the bandwidth comes from, how much bandwidth is available, etc).

2. Our offices are right next to our servers. I, or any one of my techs, can take 10 steps and be in the data center. Remote management is okay, but I never have to call some NOC monkey that can't even spell Unix and walk him through fixing a server that won't boot up. I can't tell you the number of times in the past that I've been on the phone with one of these guys and had a conversation like the following:

"Okay...type "ls" for me. No...l as is Larry, s as in Sam...NO...don't hit enter after the l...type ls, then hit enter...NO!!!...not CAPITAL LS!!!...Okay...let's start over...oh shit...never mind, I'll drive down there and do it myself..."

Now, if a server crashes, we can walk right to it and deal with it and have it back up in 5 minutes, where before, it was a much longer process.

3. I don't ever have to worry about about someone else's financial problems affecting me or my customers.

4. I can grow without having to move to a new cage because the cage I'm in isn't big enough.

Of course, owning our own data center does bring some other fun things to deal with, because now it's more than just servers and BW. Now, it's HVAC, power, extra monitoring, security, etc., but I wouldn't have it any other way

If national-net truly has their own DC space, where they personally built/hired contractors to build a Gen 5 datacenter thats amazing. 99% of the people who claim to have their own DC are subletted space in some bankrupt, or soon to be bankrupt colo provider, ie. network plus, colo.com, etc.

We were lucky enough to purchase one cheaply from a .bomb company. The basics, such as HVAC, raised flooring, power, etc were already there. We just had to clean up the mess they left behind (you'd be surprised at the expensive telecom equipment they left behind as "junk"!!!), complete it to our specs and add racks.

We own it...we run it...we control every aspect of it.

We are finalizing plans to expand, adding a pure colo only space. Up until now, we have specialized in fully-managed care, however, we have decided, based on requests from various potential customers, to start providing ping, pipe and rack. This colo center should be completed within 6 months or less.

We occasionally get blasted about our pricing, but believe me...owning and maintaining a fully operational data center with REAL 24/7 support (not an answering service...you ALWAYS talk to a Natnet tech person no matter when you call) and the redundancies that we offer is not cheap!

For the non-believers, I would be more than happy to provide a tour to anyone that would like to see
