Questions about purchasing traffic

I am considering purchasing small amounts of traffic, I have a few places researched and lined up to give trial runs with, and I thought I would ask here about this.

First of all, I've noticed a huge range in the prices that places charge for traffic. Is there a good way to ensure credibility and traffic quality? Are there any sites that review places that sell traffic?

Obviously the idea here is for me to purchase traffic for less than I conservatively expect to make off it. Since most of my traffic is currently coming from google, it is extremely targeted and relevant and thus each visitor is worth about 2 cents to me. In considering traffic purchases I am assuming a much lower traffic quality and estimating a per hit worth of 0.5 cents each.

And lastly... is purchasing traffic even considered a valid option by most of you? By even the worst case scenario estimates, I stand to make hefty profits if I purchase it at the right price.

By the way, my site is about sexuality; it doesn't contain typical adult content but most people would consider it adult oriented for obvious reasons. (I've had some trouble finding the appropriate 'category' for it in several areas of the web... seems Sexuality just isn't an option even though I feel it should be!)

Any comments you all have about traffic purchasing would be greatly appreciated.

Well, since you wrote such an intelligent question, I will respond.
If you had a lot of traffic, what would you do?
Sell it at half a cent or less per hit or try to make more money in sending your hits to a trustworthy or selling them?
I send to a trustworthy sponsor because I make more money that way, if I was to sell them at half a cent, I would have angry webmasters running after me.

dav555add: I'm not planning on selling traffic- but purchasing it. I make my money off mostly adult sponsors. I'm confused as to what you were saying.

To possibly clarify, if I average how much traffic my site received over the past 6 months, and divide it into the revenue I've earned, it comes out to an average of about $0.02 per visitor. thats what I meant by "per hit worth."

Hooterdog: If you have any advice I'm all ears. I already have top placement in google for several popular search terms (such as sex jokes, sex advice, sex guides, others that escape me at the moment) but there's some that I feel should be ranked high but aren't (such as masturbation).
