Garmin Mobile XT = phone is replacing GPS

I've had so many GPS's the past 5 years from about every major manufacturer and I've settled in on Garmin simply being the best.... With that said I finally decided to put the onboard GPS on my wifes mogul to use after using google maps for a while which is really a joke as a GPS.

Since I have unlimited internet on the phone all of the internet related things are turned on. Having it tell me gas prices in relation to what stations are closest to me, same for hotel rates to go along with auto re-routing for traffic I think I might have just replaced my standalone GPS for good. Now something that gets carried with us wherever we go does everything the Garmin Nuvi line does so why have that sitting around in the car for a quick smash and grab?

It is installed on the wifes Sprint Mogul and I only have a lowly moto Q so until I can get one of those new HTC phones I'll be the one keeping the GPS in my vehicle. Once I get the new HTC some lucky family member will be getting my GPS!

I have the 2009 maps on both the phone and the GPS. So far the phone is finding routes just as fast as the various standalones I've had....

Interesting, my phone has built in gps and Google maps works to within 10 feet of my location in the US, and is still pretty close in Europe or Mexico...

Much easier than toting my Garmin around, we leave it on the boat.

I have google maps but seriously they SUCK, with this garmin it has turn by turn TALKING TO ME, google maps doesn't have any sound. It is good for a simple map and is free.

Also to answer the other question... my phone has an integrated GPS and I'm using that so no bothering with bluetooth GPS with this phone!

to sum it up it does EVERYTHING my garmin GPS does and its already something carried around with us wherever we go.

You can get maps for anywhere you could think of, just make sure you install them before you go where you're planning to go. For me all of the US/canada streets I plan on going to are all on my little micro SD card.

the in dash GPS of every car I've test drove (like a dozen covering about every brand) is insanely bad. Considering on average you're paying like nearly $1k extra for it its just stupid. These $200 or less units works better AND are portable. Most vehicles the GPS does add quite a bit to things as an overall music player but still... give me an aftermarket deck ANY day.

I'm finding when both the internet and the GPS are on it drains the hell out of the battery so you'd better only turn the internet part on as needed. Just today I checked gas prices and found a place on my way home that was $3.89 for gas just a block "out of my way" where everybody else was $3.99 which considering my civic only drinks 10 gallons at a time it only saved a $1 but still... do that 100 times and its paid for itself.
