all seems to be working fine, yet when I go "insert image" into a new post, the pop up window just goes all white and hangs.

anyone have this problem as well? anyone found a workaround?

Try this: log out completely and close your browser. Log back in again.
See if that helps.

People still log into wordpress to make updates?

Try using something like this: http://www.blogdesk.org/en/index.htm

Much easier.
