How many links is it safe to add a week to not cause suspicion by search engines?

I can tell you this, getting 40,000 links overnight will get you banned. I've perfected the banning process, under 24 hours from getting a new domain

I got to a site of mine over 1000+ blog posts in one day, this won't get you banned it will only send you to the end of listing of the keyword you are trying to reach but eventualy you will get back.

I think it depends on what site you are linking to and where you are linking it from.

1000 good links over night will not hurt you, especially if you are linking to a quality established site.

On the flip side I think much less then that can fuck you if they are shitty backlinks and you are linking to a new site.

As long as it looks natural, you don't have to worry.

unless your using some kind of automated process that runs all day long harvesting links you won't have to worry about getting banned for adding a lot of links in one day.

if you're trying to fly under the radar then I'd say stay below 250/week...

you can push double or triple that number without incurring a ban... but if you're trying to be safe, stick with the lower end...

and mind your link velocity... try to spread it out... don't drop all your links at once...

if you site is new add ~5 links per week. Later you can start adding more, just make it look natural.

Domain age is a big factor here. A 5 year old domain with a good history can get lot's of backlinks at once where a brand new domain can get banned for too many backlinks.
