how do you remove a program if its uninstall is not working?

Do you mean that you tried to uninstall Vista, or a program in Vista? What program is it?Check and see if the program itself came with an uninstall package. The add/remove feature in Vista doesn't seem to work right.

How exactly do you expect the uninstall of the operating system to go?
And if it was successful... what would you have after it's complete?

I know, you mean a program within Vista, but that's not how you made it sound so poking fun is required

it's a program, didn't come with an uninstaller, was looking for something like a registry cleaner, maybe that would help?

Yup you can try one and you should be able to just grab a trial of Vista Manager and try to clean the registry with it:

Some registry cleaners get a little too industrious with their cleaning so I'd check what it's going to delete before it deletes it. Make sure to create a System Restore point before hand.

If you feel like doing it manually then there are only a couple of ways that I know of. Since it sounds like you're not experienced with making changes to the registry I'd stick with Method 1

Method 1:
1) Create a system restore point.
2) Delete the folder where the application was installed.
3) Delete the applications shortcut in the Start Menu if it exists.
4) In the Start Menu check that there is no shortcut for the application in "Startup".
5) Go to Start > Run > msconfig, click on Starup tab, uncheck any references to the application.

Method 2 (use at your own risk):
1) Create a system restore point.
2) Delete the folder the application was installed in.
3) Open regeit.
4) Export your entire registry to C:\ in case you need to restore it.
5) Then use regedit to search the registry for the name of the offending application and delete all references to it the search finds.

was just thinking that.
i installed ubuntu over the weekend.
it takes a little playing around with it to get to know the OS but once you know it, you love it.
it's all built around security so even if this software was not deleting itself for some odd reason, you would delete the profile and no more of the specific program issues

as everything for that profile gets erased without effecting any other users

you would need wine though to compile and be able to run windows applications but i believe that in ubuntu 8.04 it comes as a package so you would install the wine package that comes with the OS and you be on your way with no problems

and if you do run into trouble, plenty of people in forums can and do help
