I read books n stuff. I watch tons of political coverage on tv. What qualifies as being a geek when everyone you know is a computer nerd anyway?

Used to love DnD. I had the original World of Greyhawk, and wrote modules/quests. I still have a collection of hand painted figurines etc, although I've lost/traded/trashed everything else long ago (like in the 80's, lol).

Nothing is geeky anymore. The lines are blurred!

I settle arguments by whipping out my iPhone and Googleing the debated topic.

It's become expected.

By the way, I bought it out of a warehouse that was going to wind up taking it to the dump most likely. so there. ;)

1. I read comic books, I have since I was 11 or so.
2. My favorite books to read are nonfiction, usually marketing or astronomy.
3. I play video games like it's my job, especially Namco Bandai's "Tales" series lately... I would literally kill for a sequel to Tales Of The Abyss :-/
4. I play a few browser-based/MMOs... not as often, though. Urban Dead, Kingdom Of Loathing, and sometimes Starport.

Some geeky things I have done:

1) written operating system code
2) generated IRQ's by grounding paperclips to the CPU pins directly
3) written programs using only a hex editor
4) turned an ordinary CRT monitor into an AM radio morse code transmitter entirely through software.
5) modified COMMAND.COM with a hex editor to rename DIR to DEL and DEL to DIR.
6) I've read "The Art of Computer Programming"
7) research virtual machines and compiler design for fun in my spare time
8) played D&D, Champions, and WoW
9) build software for a planetary orbit simulator back in high school for a physics project
10) programmed in more languages than I have fingers

hm i dont think i have any geek stuff i do.... well i love to watch movies but thats not really geeky. I suck at programming and hate it with all my heart and try to avoid it mostly, hate star wars movies, and think lord of the rings and world of warcraft are extremely childish and unrealistic and are not appealing at all to me. Those are some main geeky things i guess, and i all hate 'em.

I write code, reverse engineer search engines, tinker with bots and scripts. To most people, this is boring as hell.

Some geeky things I've done in the past...

- built a couple of Z80 based boards from scratch, with wiring soldered between each pin/pad, and without any circuit diagram. The first had a whopping 2 kilobytes of RAM and little DIP switches to load the program (which was assembly code scribbled on a sheet then hand-converted to hex). I added various things to it and at one point it had a speech synthesizer answering the phone and a relay to start a tape recorder. I was about 16-17 at the time.

- added 64K RAM to my 1MB 286 with a couple of 32K static RAMs. Can't remember exactly how but I think there was a memory hole of that size somewhere (maybe 1MB to 1MB+64, is that the HMA?) that I filled using some simple address decoding. Increasing your RAM by 6.4% isn't exactly significant but I had the parts laying around, and that's what being geeky is, right? :D

- wrote and ran a BBS on an old 6502 BBC Model B, when they were obsolete and 386's were pretty much the standard processor. I continued using a Model B until about 1992-1993 when I got the 286 given to me.

- in 1994 I started work on a BASIC-like language that generates 80x86 ASM and small executables, since it does not include redundant library code like QuickBasic/VBDOS does. It's fairly well known in the BASIC/old school DOS circles. I stopped developing it in the early 2000's.

- today, I'm building a NAS/backup box with 3TB of storage, including 5 x 750GB drives in RAID3 config, FreeBSD 7.0 64 bit, and hanging off its own UPS.

I get excited when my new pc mag arrives.
I went to the introduction to windows 98, microsoft rented movie theatres all over the country. They had free soda and popcorn and a live feed of the introduction. Then they had a trivia contest for prizes, they would give a quote bill gates said and they would have to give the year and where it was said. Each quote ten to twenty hands would go up and it was like fuck who would remember this shit? People yellin out comdex 1984. lol
