Interesting SE stuff?

The Big Change

So after months of speculation, Yahoo finally announced that they would continue their relationship with Google. The biggest surprise however, is that Yahoo has opted for a strategy that goes beyond merely maintaining the relationship. As of October 10th, Yahoo directory results and Google web pages will no longer be shown separately and will instead be combined to provide new Web Matches. These Web Matches will be the combined results of both Yahoo and Google indexes, but displayed using Yahoo's own algorithm. This combined structure moves away from the previous arrangement whereby Yahoo only displayed Google results when there were no Yahoo directory results for a particular search query. With the new Web Matches, you will no longer see the Google logo appearing in the top left of the screen and the only way you will be able to determine that a result has been drawn from the Yahoo directory, as opposed to Google, will be a link under the listing that reads "More sites about" and a red arrow graphic. This link will allow Yahoo users to click through to the Yahoo directory to view more websites within the same theme. While the new search results will use a Yahoo algorithm, initial testing has shown that this algorithm is very similar to Google's own, and in some cases it can be very difficult to see a difference between the order of Yahoo's results and those of Google.

The Impact On Your Website

So, what does this change mean for anyone looking for high positioning on Yahoo? Well, the biggest question centers on the benefit of paying $299 to be listed in the Yahoo directory. While there are Yahoo users who navigate through the directory of human edited listings, most prefer to use the search function to locate the product or service they are seeking. With this in mind, most companies will be able to utilize the traffic from Yahoo without having to pay the $299 a year that was once the only way of securing any chance of top positioning on the Yahoo search engine results.

GOOGLE has been kicking yahoo's ass since the yahoos at yahoo got greedy and decided to bend everyone over! (It's $600 for adult sites at yahoo I believe.)

Yeoooow!

Then again, maybe I'm full of shit.

Am I the only one to find this disturbing?
WTF is happening now? The 2 most used search tools on the internet will show the same results. This means more money to the people at the top, less for the people who can't make it.
The other SE's are dying and it's just a matter of time before there aren't alot of options left for the surfer but to get a) Google results or PPC results.
The rich get richer, the poor get poorer.
In the long run, as competition increases for the fewer top 10 spots, more people will resolve to using spammy techniques, degrading the search results.
Those SE's will use more aggressive filters to get rid of the spam, making it very difficult for small sites to find a place.
Am I the only one alarmed by this?

Would you say that Yahoo's biggest draw has been it's capacity as a search engine? And if so, wouldn't Yahoo want to do something about it's biggest competitor : google? I would think Yahoo would want to acquire Google eventually to eliminate them as their biggest competitor in the SE world. This may be one step in that direction? If not, you're right, it's odd to have two sites doling out the same SE results. Also, why would Yahoo, after having customers pay to be listed in their directory, wanto to have DMOZ results returned FIRST, before their PAYING clients? This can't be what they are shooting for. I don't think Yahoo is that dumb. I think they'll eventually gobble Google up, and spit DMOZ out for good. What sayeth all ye?

That's also why i'm worried. As powerful as they already are, them gobbling google up would mean the end of real search engines as it is. Yahoo would either use Google's SE technology, or get rid of it.
Still less space for the webmaster to work. Very soon no one will be able to get listed for free. It's already very hard, if Google goes away, no one will be able to get significant traffic to their website for free.
Until another Google comes along and refuses to be bought out before they get too big of course.

Another course of action would be that Yahoo keeps the Google technology, give more priority to it's own listings and keeps the Google results for typos and misspellings or anything that can't be found directly in their database, diminishing the importance of Google's results.

Let's also consider Google's Adwords system. It could be very valuable for Yahoo if most of their results are delivered from their database. They are already using a system for the sites in their directory giving them the option to be ranked higher. That could remain in place and still show Adwords results for sites that are not included in the Yahoo DB, giving you results that could look like this: http://www.hornypoodle.com/yahoogle.jpg

Google is already too big to be eaten by Yahoo... I know Google aren't going to be making as much money as Yahoo but in terms of market/consumer share, Google are the top dog.

I think Yahoo have made the right move for the long term - yes they fuck us webmasters over a little, but they retain their value as a search engine/web directory.

No google co branding but the highest quality search results in the world? Good move yahoo! Finally you are making steps to keeping all those regular searchers you've worked hard to obtain.

Look at the bigger picture from Yahoo's point of view and they've made the right move... The Yahoo scramble for cash and profitability is over, it's now time for quality again!

As a webmaster, what does it do for you?
Not much except limit your already limited access to your target market.

Yahoo has unwittingly made DMOZ that much more important, and that fact alone is scary. Google should dump DMOZ and be done with them.

To be fair... When you accepted yahoo's terms of service for that, you accepted that they did not promise to list you in any particular spot or page. They also did not even promise to list you at all, they merely promise to "review" your site and list it somewhere if they wanted to.

So getting your money back thru CB, when you did in fact get exactly what they promised was just another example of why Visa is fucking us all right now. CC fraud.

fnet,
For some reason, I'm thinking Yahoo's new Google search results was going to return DMOZ results as well. I had a moment of severe retardom. It happens

Visa...Yahoo...Bush....Ashhahahahaha...Gore...the "moral majority".

Ya know what it's all starting to remind me of? The Stand. Some are called to bumfuck Nebraska and some are called to the glitz of Nevada. It's strange when ya step back and look at the bigger picture, kinda scarey but exciting in an adrenaline rush sort of way. The lines in the sand are being drawn. People are in that initial stage of WTF?!, not sure which direction to move, what to do, who to trust, who to ask, where to go, how to go about it, in the biz. Other side seems to be quite secure in their political positions, secure that their greed and strong arms will reign victorious.

Scramble. But consider who it is that has the real power.

By the way, there isn't any money in porn because everybody and their brothers are all jumping into the biz pushing all the same old shit...all the newbies hit the same paysites to push, same sponsors, same everything...spending all their time trying to outdo and outsurvive each other, pulling all kinds of in your face marketing ploys that really just piss surfers off where they leave that *AD* site and leave it again the next 37 times they hit it because it pissed em off the first time they had it slam 157 consoles up on their monitors...so all 112503 porn-masters promoting all the same shit are basically gonna presume there's no money in porn.

Maybe not. But there's still plenty of money in adult entertainment online........

Yes... Nuclei is right, you are the reason adult webmasters are in the trouble they are in... You got what Yahoo promised, in fact you got much more as they DID list you!

Your position is secure... Fuck nut!

If I sold penis pills (which I don't) and your dick shrunk, then I would give you $50,000 mate but that ain't going to happen cos I don't sell them!

You mark my words, one day someone will chargeback against you at a really sensitive time maybe when you are at a 1% CB limit, make it 1.1% and put you out of business!

Yes - it's true Google continues to gain ground - they deliver the best product, so why not?

One benifit of having a Yahoo directory listing is it gives a major relevancy boost for Google, as does DMOZ.
