nas drive (network attached staorage) buy any empty shell (3-4 drive holders) and throw in your own drives and use raid 5.

all usb/firwire/whateevr are over priced crap .. and don't buy those populair network drives like mybook either. (mybook has funny software that decides for you what you're allowed to put on yoru drives and what not ... yeah right!)

personal I use ..Intel SS4000-E Entry Storage System Intelligent Network Storage System

Do you need to be able to carry it different places and plug into other computers? If so, get an external enclosure with eSATA and USB. Some now even have eSATA, USB, and Firewire. eSata is an absolute must for any kind of decent transfer speed.

If you just want to add extra capacity to your existing computer, take a look at using a mobile rack... you just hotswap in the drive and you're good to go. I love these things: http://www.kingwin.com/mobileracks.asp

These things are pretty cool, but are USB only: http://www.tripplite.com/products/pr...productID=3769

I have had great luck with the Fantom Drives that buy.com puts on sweet sales every once in a while.

best advice here.

and put in quality / enterprise drives, check warranty, at least 3 year, try for 5 year warranty drive. that shows the manufacturer knows there good.

I do use usb boxes with 3-5 year drives for my clients backups, but not for live data.
also, vanatec makes an ide case with rubber mounts for drive, i'm still waiting for the sata ver.

I have a couple of the MyBooks. They are ok, and so far no issues. Cheap.

Make sure the model you get has a drive spin-down feature. It will shut off the drive when it's not being used and spin it back up when you need to access it. It usually takes only a couple of seconds but can dramatically increase the lifespan of the drive. Most drives get "cooked" inside of the enclosure since they are built so air tight.
