I had a friend who used to have a '68 Hemi Superbee. It had something like 625 ft/lbs of torque. He said he had to run it off of torpedo fuel that cost like $7/gallon (or was it per pound?)

Anyway, he had old time slips showing it doing 10.8 quarters. Not exactly shabby for a street-legal car.

Amusing side note: I think he had to get rid of it for cheap as part of a divorce settlement and about 4 years ago, I saw one on the cover of Auto Trader (the exact same car, '68 Hemi Superbee) selling for $64,000.

Not bad.. I dig the blown hemi, I may have seen that car in Maryland a year or two ago.

Personally, built up an 11 second Buick and an SCCA solo autocross racer, both a ton of fun.. it's too late and I'm too tired to upload/link pics, if anyone wants to take a peek msg me 104600940. Professionally, done a ton of work with different race teams and engine builders.. this adult thing is a side gig, I'm an engineer by trade

Closest thing I can think of is Taurus SHO.. has a Yamaha engine.. but I wouldn't even consider that a "Modern Musclecar" like the Grand National.. more of a mild performance sedan with limited potential. heh

Are you on crack? Front wheel drive equals no muscle car. Period.

You might be right, my apologies.

As far as modern muscle cars...I think the M5 counts. Some pilot in my neighbourhood has one with a Superflow exhaust and I'll be goddamned if it doesn't sound like a Chevelle SS.

You decided on the mitsu 3000gt?

I think the skyline qualifies as a modern japanese muscle car!

I think a Skyline is more like a cruise missile than a muscle car.

To be classified a muscle car, a car I realy think, has to be naturally aspirated....a 120 pound guy on meth may be super strong but he's not a body builder.

IMHO, anyway...muscle car HP should be made through cubes, polishing, porting, big headers, big lobe cams, etc.

ahhh, in which case the skyline would definitely not be a muscle car.

Personally, I think it would be more fun to drive a cruise missile then a muscle car.... unless we are just going in a straight line.. then 1500HP would be cool :P

Well the thrill of a muscle car is the fact that all you have are your wits and a big ole steering wheel to keep that thing under control...so in terms of outright speed: cruise missile, but in terms of fun?

If I had a choice between a mid sixties LS1 Chevelle SS and a Skyline GTR...I'd have to flip a coin...and I'd still lean towards the Chevelle.

You guys had to go and make me drool all over my keyboard

I used to be into fast cars, but traffic, lack of racing facilities, insurance, getting married et all made it pretty impractical to have nice hp cars anymore

we had mustangs roadrunners, and even a 68 shelby gt500

anyway great pics

ARGH! You guys are KILLING me!! Give me some of that Detroit rolling iron with as many horses as will fit under the hood, and I'm a happy lady!!

My dream car? 1970 Hemi Cuda. With original equipment like that, who needs blown?

Oh, and a '65 GTO would look nice in my driveway, too.

In high school I had a root beer metallic 68 Mach 1 with a 351. I used to go through rear BF Goodriches like they were disposable.

In response to The Dukes of Hazzard shows, yes, they did destroy a great number of them, but there were still a bunch left.

Wayne Wooten, the guy who runs the Dodge Charger Registry, called Warner Brothers to see if there were any General Lee's left, and if they were for sale. Long story short, they wound up flying him out to the California set where most of the show was filmed (and yes, Cooter's Garage is still standing, just as it was when they stopped filming in the 80s), whereupon they took him to a grassy lot behind one of the buildings, and lo and behold it was filled with nothing but used (and abused) General Lee Chargers.

Wayne told me his jaw just about hit the ground when he saw so many ORIGINAL General Lee's all in one place. They wound up striking a deal, and selling the cars exclusively to members of the Registry, the buyers of which were asked to pay only what they could afford. There were some raging hot deals happening, wish I'd had money at the time

Also, Warner Brothers meticulously documented all of the cars they didn't trash. Almost all of them that survived were fitted with a special plate stating they were used on the show (a "Certificate of Authenticity" if you will). If anyone ever tries to sell you a "genuine" General Lee, look for it. If it isn't there, it's probably a fake
