HDR photography (PICS)

how it works:
- you set your camera to take multiple shots simultaneously
- pref three shots
- regular, over exposed, and underexposed
- each will give you details in different sections of the shot
- to get the sky, you lose detail everywhere else (goes dark); to get detail on landscape, sky comes out bright, etc..

this software Photomatix (photoshop also does this FILE-> AUTOMATE->MERGE HDR, but this one's better) puts the three together and comes out great! this is my first attempt at it so bear with me...

post em if you got em... I got some more coming...

I've been playing around with HDR myself but still need to work the kinks out. What seems to work best is -2/0/+2 EV and letting Photomatix do its thing.

That is its from the side of the hotel. If he turned to the right he would see the ocean. Thats the canal right in front of that building.

I've played with HDR a few times, but I kinda feel dirty every time I do it. Don't get me wrong - it definitely has its place - but sometimes it's done to death
For me, the HDR balance is when it's subtle:

I must admit though, I prefer the challenge of getting those similar shots, without the HDR, ie,

Any camera that you can over / under expose. You can even 'trick' cameras that can't normally do it into doing it, but I guess your biggest trouble then is having the shots exactly lined up

I'd like to know that too. I've asked a few people in this thread for some shooting tips, but they start tossing out camera geek lingo, then i go cross eyed and have no idea what they're talking about.

If you're using a [d]SLR, or similar, you'll have a thing called exposure bracketing.
You'll take one shot over exposed, one under, and one normal.

It's not 3 photos at once, it's just taking 3 photos, each with a different exposure level.

What HDR is actually doing is merging all the elements together to one - so it will use the 'normallly' exposed photo as a base - for over-exposed elements, it'll pull them from the under-exposed image, and for under-exposed elements, it'll bring them in from the over-exposed image - hence being able to have a deep blue sky + clouds on a sunny day, and the foreground correctly exposed....

That, or he's taken 3 photos of the stationary bikers, hdr'd them, and photoshopped out the movement of the guy in the sky.

thats what i was thinking, it would be nice if you could take 3 captures in one shot, the dynamic range would be out of this world..
there was another guy here who posted some very nice evening time hdr photos, i think they were city views/lights.

Don't think you mean parallax ;)
You might mean [barrel] distortion, because it's a rectalinear lens, though.

Could you do the same thing if you're shooting in Raw format and just nudge the exposure +/- and save as 3 separate .JPG's?

To an extent. Photomatix will actually let you do that [lets you tweak the EV] - but with that said, there's only so much you can pull out of a RAW...
