HDR photography (PICS)
how it works:
- you set your camera to take multiple shots simultaneously - pref three shots - regular, over exposed, and underexposed - each will give you details in different sections of the shot - to get the sky, you lose detail everywhere else (goes dark); to get detail on landscape, sky comes out bright, etc.. this software Photomatix (photoshop also does this FILE-> AUTOMATE->MERGE HDR, but this one's better) puts the three together and comes out great! this is my first attempt at it so bear with me... http://www.abyssent.com/abyss_al/hdr/mammoth_002.jpg post em if you got em... I got some more coming... :) |
catalyst does some great hdr stuff
|
I've been playing around with HDR myself but still need to work the kinks out. What seems to work best is -2/0/+2 EV and letting Photomatix do its thing.

What kind of camera can you do this with?
|
I've played with HDR a few times, but I kinda feel dirty every time I do it. Don't get me wrong - it definitely has its place - but sometimes it's done to death
For me, the HDR balance is when it's subtle: http://ninjito.com/dump/2008-01-02/qx-rerb-1.jpg http://ninjito.com/dump/2008-01-01/qx-noisy-3.jpg I must admit though, I prefer the challenge of getting those similar shots, without the HDR, ie, http://ninjito.com/dump/2007-11-01/qx-ce-2.jpg http://ninjito.com/dump/2008-01-05/qx-castle-2.jpg -- for example :) |

You'll take one shot over exposed, one under, and one normal. It's not 3 photos at once, it's just taking 3 photos, each with a different exposure level. What HDR is actually doing is merging all the elements together to one - so it will use the 'normallly' exposed photo as a base - for over-exposed elements, it'll pull them from the under-exposed image, and for under-exposed elements, it'll bring them in from the over-exposed image - hence being able to have a deep blue sky + clouds on a sunny day, and the foreground correctly exposed.... |

You might mean [barrel] distortion, because it's a rectalinear lens, though. |
