It seems lately that bad economic news is followed by good news is followed by bad news, etc etc.

"Encouraged by stronger orders and shipments, manufacturers in New York state were once again positive about the economy in April, the New York Federal Reserve Bank reported Tuesday. The Empire State index jumped by nearly 23 points in April to 0.6 from negative 22.2 in March. Readings over zero indicate more firms are optimistic than are pessimistic. The index had been negative for two straight months. In April, the percentage of firms reporting better conditions rose to 27% from 19%, while the percentage reporting worsening conditions fell to 26% from 41%. "

that's because the union system in the US is a bit messed up. In Iceland you automatically belong to the union of whatever profession you are in. If you change professions you change unions automatically. And the great thing is that there are no union fees, most of the unions work with (or are somehow linked to) pension funds who deal with their expenses.
This also means corporations can't get away with fucking people over or the union gets involved, someone is known employing illegal immigrants the union gets involved (as illegals clearly don't get paid union rates).
It's a pretty good system, not perfect but better than risking getting fired for joining or forming a union like 'mac' workers in the US

Unions are not perfect. When I worked in telco, I was a union steward. Lots of fucking politics. Later took a management job, so I see it from both sides of the issue(s).

However, I still believe unions are good for workers on the whole.
