I've ordered food and paid at the door with my debit card. I keep a few hundred bucks on me for pocket money, but I've never seen the need to keep more than that laying around, or in a safe. Unless of course one wants the ability at all times to make purchases and go places without leaving a paper trail. :D
A few years ago everyone who made a purchase at Winn Dixie on a particular day got double dinged on their debit card. This kept people who were living on the edge from being able to use whatever the "doubled" amount was for several days until the bank got everything situated.

As far as using them to get cash, I can't remember when it was but there was a holiday that fell on a Friday before the Kentucky Derby one year and the ATMs literally ran out of cash (kinda funny for a state that prohibits gambling).

I've heard MANY stories of debit cards having holds put on them by gas stations, hotels and rental car places.

These things don't happen all the time obviously, but debit cards aren't always as good as cash IMO (I only have one and keep less than $1K in that account).

Cash in the house is also very handy for "cash discounts" when something needs to be fixed. It's amazing how fast a $200 plumbing bill becomes a $50 bill for the company that you write a check to and $50 in cash to the worker. Not that I've ever done that, of course.......

I didn't mean "physically" as in your arms are tied behind you.

Here's my for-instance... In 2003 Revenue Canada froze my two bank accounts because I was late on my first tax payment as a self-employed person... I was overdue because I needed the money for other things and was in a tough spot, as well as generally inexperienced with doing my own taxes and paying quarterly, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen to someone else. Without warning they just shut off any access to all my money, and all my cheques and bill payments bounced while I was unable to buy groceries etc until I called them and got it sorted out.

I always live in the "today" because I don't fucking know if there is a tomorrow

I am not wasting my life worrying about saving and what I will do when I am 60....I always thought I would be dead by the time I am 30 (yes, i live THAT hard), so any days I have after that are blessings....

on the same note, yeah, I do save, but I also move so much and am not the most responsible guy in the world, so there is no way I am going to buy property or tie my money up in something that I have to maintain, hell I can barely get an ebay auction sent off in time, haha

How do you know whether you are engaging in an illegal activity under the legal concept of "obscenity"?

"Money changes everything. Most adult webmasters are in this business to make a living. They seek to generate as much revenue as possible, under their current business plan. However, with the sentencing guidelines, the more money you gross the more severe the sentence. The potential sentence is enhanced based on pecuniary gain. U.S.S.G. 2G3.1(b)(1)(A). Those webmasters found guilty who make an inordinate amount of money will spend more time behind bars under the Sentencing Guidelines. While this is not a reason to intentionally decrease your revenue, it is important to note that the more successful a defendant is, the greater the sentence in the federal system. It should also be mentioned that any revenue, or other assets associated with the business, will likely be forfeited to the government in connection with any sentence. All such assets will be frozen immediately upon arrest, until final disposition of the case." -Lawrence Walters

Just for the record I don't actually own a Chevy Cavalier or spinner rims. Just wanted to make that clear.

You of course need to do what works for you. But on the off chance that we all do have a future, I think my way is the better course of action. Putting some ducks in a row and having some self-generating sources of income in place is a great thing to have, and if done properly can not only fuel even your kind of lifestyle but afford you MORE time to enjoy it. I mean really, someone who has planned for the future and no longer needs to work can certainly party more often than someone who didn't plan for a damn thing and has to continue to scrimp and earn a living, right?

Risk is everywhere in life. Manage it the best you can.

Another smart thing to do is have money in more than one bank. That way if you lose your ATM card for one bank or have your account frozen up you can still access your other account.
