I've been all over the U.S., and there is no place even close to as "scary" as Detroit. Theres just so many desolate areas with abandoned homes and no street lights. If you're caught in one of those areas and someone wants to "get" you, it's over.

minddust 07-29-2008 03:44 PM

We don't have ghetto in Canada?

Hochelaga
Montreal Nord
Cartier Saint Henry

...it's pretty fucking ghetto...

It was a Favala allright. The worst one as well
I was with a local guy and a lot of people in Brazil thought I was actually a Paulista. I integrate very fast.
:)

I just looked up where I was. It was in Rocinha. And yeah...I would not do it again.

Years ago on a road trip to california, I decided to read the map and give up on LA's stupidly insane highway system. (I was riding shotgun, so that made me the Navigator.) We ended up taking a "shortcut" to the beach by heading down Slauson.. which met up with Crenshaw. And yes, there we were. In rap video heaven. I have never seen so much barbed wire in the middle of a city in my life. But we were never directly threatened. Just lots of aimless people milling about, but nothing else going on.

notoldschool 07-29-2008 05:04 PM

Serbia & Tuzla,Bosnia.
Panama City not in Florida.
Baltimore is pretty bad as well as DC at night.

ThumbLord 07-29-2008 05:11 PM

Joburg and Soweto ( S.A.) will probably scare the shit out of all Americans, I was born in South Africa, near the border of Lesotho, lived there for 17 years and trust me, you have no clue.
I am living happily in the Kingdom of the Netherlands now but again most people have no clue, well some have after reading all the threads.

Beanz 07-29-2008 05:25 PM

For the most part, grew up all over East and South LA... and living there you never think it's so bad (although I will never live there again)... but the scariest place I have ever been... Clanton, AL... This is no place for a person named Beanz

Chauncy 07-29-2008 05:26 PM

beemk 07-29-2008 05:31 PM

Although I have had an 8" knife to my throat on that very intersection, Main and Hastings isn't really that scary... eveyones too strung out to pose danger.

ThumbLord 07-29-2008 05:34 PM

what beemk said, I am afraid.
and yes DirtyWhiteBoy is correct, most of you have no clue, sorry.

Tales Of the Slums of Richmond VA--

I used to party in a bar called the Jade Elephant on the 900 block of West Grace, in the mid eighties.

Once I was in there, and I heard a commotion, and whn I asked what had happened a guy said his friend had been stabbed. So I looked and there he was bleeding out, he died and they caught the guy who did it.

Another time I was there with my three (white) friends, and they ahd hip hop going that night so they ahd a black crowd. One black guy who was pretty drunk stumbled down the stair to get into some kind of shoving match with the cop walking by. Next thing you know, the bar empties out to fight the cops, and 20 cop cars are called, fllling a couple blocks with cop cars.

We slide out of the bar, and decide the street is to hairy so we duck into another bar.

It's a slow night at the other place, so it's just us 4 white guys and some black dudes playing pool, maybe 12. We order beers and sit down, and one big black dude walks over to us.."Hey man, what's going on out there?" he asks.
"A race riot" I reply.
"Well fuck that shit!" he answers, touches glaseses with each of us, and goes back to play pool.

Don't take it personal. Most Americans can't think outside their own country.

Maybe the two of you can put your heads together and show me where anyone said there were no scary ghettos outside of the USA.

How exactly did you read "there are no scary ghettos outside the USA" or the "USA has the scariest ghettos" into...

I would never go to the ghettos in South Africa. I've heard too many stories and not just on here...one of my friends is South African and he has told me some crazy stories!

its not that bad three new beautiful hotel casino's, two new stadiums, great nightclubs downtown is nice the residential areas outside of downtown are a bit third worldish but all you have to do is not get of the freeway until you hit downtown

MediaGuy 07-29-2008 10:00 PM

In Boston, I think it may have been Jamaica Park, you drove off of paved roads and find yourself in dirt roads, trailer homes, little kids running around barefoot like in the Appalachian wilds... freaky.

In Rochester, NY, a whole part of the city looked bombed out, like Bosnia, empty buildings with no floors, no windows, fires burning on some floors, stripped-out cars and naked children playing on piles of rubble...

And this wasn't really scary, but the heart of San Diego, bus station in the middle of the night, the ONLY place open in the middle of the night, where all the homeless and freaks hung out til morning, homeless families, this one freaky guy with his nose missing, a real carnival...

It's gross for sure, but there is no area of Vancouver that I would compare to your average american ghetto.

czarina 07-30-2008 10:48 AM

Opa Locka, in Miami at like 1AM. I went to take a girlfriend to her boyfriend's house and got completely lost. That was not a good experience

Yep, Canadians talking about places in Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver is ridiculous compared to some of the places mentioned in this thread - the U.S. and everywhere else. Please, our worst neighbourhood is like Disneyland ...

Dude -- I forgot about Overtown! I had to go to the hospital near Overtown, and the taxi drove through it. It was FUCKED! Full on crack zone. I have heard it has been cleaned up somewhat now.
