+1 on that, Memphis is like one giant ghetto. Atlanta has some really really bad areas, especially during the mid to late 80's, FUUUUCKKK...

Philly scares the shit out of me, and certains parts of Chicago are pretty bad. Detroit was not as scary as everyone makes it out to be, maybe because I went in the middle of the winter and there was not a fucking soul in site.

ha.. we bought a 4 plex on k Street to rent to tenants via the tacoma housing authority (section 8)... holy shit.. there was definitely some scary shit going on there. the funny thing was that when we had finally finished remodeling things and had the house ready, a woman next door started talking to us telling us about all the people who had been killed there. then she showed us bullet holes in the walls etc that we didn't realize were bullet holes.

then... when you drove towards I-5... all the way towards the end, there were these black chicks always on the corner. ... armed to the teeth and letting you know if you looked at them.

Some Russian villages I lived in were pretty ghetto. Traveling through Jamaica there were spots I wouldn't want to spend any longer than I had to in either.

I went a few villages inland in Jamaica, then had trouble starting my scooter when it got dark. Guy pretended to be really nice, then said he was gonna make me have sex with him. I told him he'd better have something to kill me with, or I'd claw his eyes out and bite a gaping hole in his neck so he wouldn't have to breathe through his nose anymore. I don't back down - "crazy" seems to work just fine for me.

Tenderloin in S.F. and Skid Row in Los Angeles at night and on foot can get a little hairy, too. These have been on the way to parties... never had anything bad happen to me, but have seen some awful stuff in S.F. - guy getting punched and having his bicycle taken, guy pulling a knife in a restaurant. I have been very lucky, I guess. :upsidedow

Your point is an accurate one. In the north most "bad areas" and full on ghettos have a decrease in crime as the temperature drops.

The southern states and California fester all year long because of the weather... with the crime rate everywhere increasing as the temperature increases.

Fuck, forgot about NOLA, some of the worst shit I've ever seen...and Baltimore as well.

I got lost in the bowels of Detroit once with my mom, about 100K worth of jewelery being worn by us, and driving a mercedes sport.

At one point a gang of guys were trying to surround our car I hit the horn, put my foot to the floor and they had to jump out of my way in order to avoid being hit. These same guys then jumped into a car and proceeded to follow us. The roads were empty, no cars out, no cops and I am racing through the ghetto with my mom trying to shove jewelery in her underwear lol.

Finally I came upon a bus stopped at a red light. I stopped, with the car chasing us right behind us, and I yelled out "that car is chasing us, point us to the border...and the bus driver looked out the window at the car behind us, and said "when this light goes green you turn right down that street, I will pull up and block the intersection to give you a head start...follow it and it will lead you to the signs for the border"

At that moment, I hit the gas, swerved in front of the bus and went about 80 down this street and saw the bus blocking the intersection. The guys never caught up to us and we were soon safe and sound at the Detroit/Canada tunnel crossing.

Any street with old ladies begging for change scares the shit out of me

South Oak Cliff in dallas.
Stoped to get some gas and some thug wanted me to pay for his gas as well. Told him to get lost so he got all in my face about being racist and went back to his car to get the gun. I took off leaving my gas cap and 1/3 of my pre-paid gas. Used rolled up socks in my gas tank for 3 month before buying new cap :)

Liberty City in Miami, FL. 1am after making a few wrong turns. I thought I was going to die for sure.:Oh crap

I was there during the riot. I was visiting Miami and was staying in a hotel on I 95 so I could go to this badass club. I think it was called " The Other Place " and it was on the east side of I 95 and Liberty City is on the west side. After the club I went straight back to the hotel. Turned on the TV and I was like WTF! Sure glad I didn't go out looking for a late night snack

Hell yeah Brazil. I have been in one of those mountain ghettos in Rio. I remember the name of barrio started with an R. Some houses where protected by guys with UZI's in clear sight. I think the thing that saved me was that I actually talked to these guys as it was the most normal thing in the world. Other people saw this and left me alone thinking I belonged to them.

Having been there I went to the famous Club Help the next day. I left there when it was closing time as pretty much the last person. The bouncer told me to take a cab as the kids in the street would probably kill me. I was stubborn and drunk though and wanted to take the short walk to where I was staying. Very fast I was surrounded by those glue sniffing kids who started begging for money. I did not want to give them cause getting out my wallet did not seem like the smartest thing. So they started to try to help themselves to my wallet. Being very drunk I just picked up one of those kids, lifted him up and spanked him like the "naughty boy" he was. Oddly enough they left me alone after that.

Its only later in life when you realize the kind of danger you have been in. And that is a good thing cause often not realising it can actually save you.

I went to a loft party on Wall St in downtown L.A. once, it was a homeless person village with tents everywhere. During the short walk to the party, 3 different people attempted to sell me crack.

west philly easily took the cake and ive been all over NYC.

then i would imagine some places in the midwest, ive driven by Gary, Indiana but cant say ive driven thru it, but west philly for sure was fucking scary.

The entry to the favelas in Rio did it for me. I turned back.

Being a philly native, I have been to prolly every neighborhood and some are REAL funky to roll thru..... Knowing people in the hood makes all the difference in the world.

however by far - Camden NJ is the land of the lost. That makes even the bronx look like a cakewalk.

YES...i know exactly which part of tampa you are talking about was SHOCKED cuz i didnt know that there even was a ghetto there but had to drive thru it to get to the spa that we were going to and got rear ended and almost stuck there.....and i said forget this....take my car wherever and get me outta here...needless to say i got a great massage and a new car that weekend :)

The worst is to be driving in Houston... and turn the GPS off freeways/Toll roads... We did it thinking that we were just gonna go cruising, take some back streets, see some nice areas....

Next thing ya know, we're passing Acres Homes library... and crack house after crack house....

Also parts of Riviera Beach just N of West Palm are bad...

I agree with Houston's 5th ward and several areas in Houston are scary ! I get nervous driving in certain parts of Bossier City Louisiana too but Houston's 5th ward is scary and I know why it's your first choice

I live in the 2nd worst area of Toronto for % of population in jail. There's nowhere I'd be afraid to go at night, not one. And I've been to most. I don't carry a gun or weapon either.

So tell me, is there any area you've ever been to anywhere in Canada that you wouldn't stop at a red light, for example? Just read some of the stories posted earlier, how many were in Canada?

Lost in Mexico somewhere...drunk on Spring Break years ago!! Not too far from Cancun...VERY scary place for 3 young girls!! Running a close 2nd...i'll have to say a couple spots in downtown Miami Beach!!

I was born in South Africa and trust me there are very scary ghetto's outside the USA.

In 2007 there were approx. 1500 murders in Jamaica, an island with a population of ~2.7 million people.

And by far most of killings came from the many slums on the island, places that clearly you don't want to be. So yes, there are scary places outside the U.S. and it's ridiculous/ignorant to think all the worst are in America.

Soweto in South Africa in the 80's was pretty intense. We lived about 25 miles from it. Went into it once with armed police looking for two guys who mugged me..
