This morning when I got into work I had this interesting popup on my PC:

Anyone know how they do that? Looks like a direct message to my computer..

Recently I received an e-mail that advertised a service like it:

Quote:
"The newest technology in mailing - EXPLOIT SOFTWARE"

- Send a MESSAGE straight to the users desktop DIRECTLY!!!
- No need for the recipient to check his/her e-mail or even have a browser open!!
- NO e-mail addresses needed.
- NO proxys needed.
- NO blind relays needed.
- NO headers are sent with your message, so it's NOT spam.

Direct IP mailing technology!

- Mail to IP addresses only!
- STOP WASTING YOUR WEB HITS.
- This can double/triple your sales over traditional mass mailing programs, ask us how
- Be the FIRST one to send YOUR type of message in YOUR market.
- SUPER affordable. You can get started for only $500.00 a month, and mail millions upon millions of messages.
- Totally safe for the recipients... no possibilty of a virus!
Hmmmmmm....

And I receive those #$%^#$% University Diplomas on almost all of my e-mail addresses.... they are the most aggressive spammers I know. They do not advertise a website, but always a phone number. Man, I would like to shut them down!

That is a net send message, old DOS comand built it to windows,

To disable on NT4, Win2k and XP go to your services and disable your "Messenger Service"

This will not affect any other services of your PC.

It was mostly used in office Networks, you could send a "Net Send" message to all compuetrs on your network.

It's been years since I have touched a win98 machine the service is somewhere?

All the spammer needs in your computer name to do this.

Regards,

Kevin

you wouldnt need a computer name, you can send the mesaage to all computers on a network using the /users command. For those of you at college on a large network, you can have some serious fun with this!

I got one of those also!

WTF! I've been getting a bunch of little popups periodically w/o having anything open.

There is a program that keeps installing itself, called "Gator Ads" or something like that. Don't know how it gets there, but, I remove it, and it comes back.

I wonder if that has something to do with that popup this morning.

I wondered if anyone would figure out netsend/messenger for spams. It's annoying isn't it?

http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/a...374542,00.html

That has instructions on how to disable the built-in network messenger. It will stop these ads.

Yup that's a win2k net message...you can modify it to send to ip's, then rename your computer and blammo..I have it...but ain't gonna give that shit out...its the bane of all spam...specially since I could send like 15k to one computer and you'd have to close them all before you could do anything...

I use blackice as a firewall and it won't stop them...its nice to send them to the script kiddies on windows tho...

"You have recieved a message! From:HOAXR To:65.124.89.001
Stop it with the port probe's before I ruin your day!"

I got that exact same thing yesterday on XP. My messenger wasn't even connected. I had just finished checking out a ARS link and I spent the next hour trying to replicate it. (thinking it came from the ars tour)

Some good info here, thanks.
