Domain registrar refuses to turn off transfer lock... what to do?

A couple days ago, I decided to transfer all my domains over to namecheap. I turned off whois privacy and the lock on them all, and then initiated the transfer.

It turns out that after I made the changes, all my whois searches were giving errors and wouldn't display. Namecheap had to manually confirm the whois data for everything and then sent the confirmation emails. The transfers were all automatically cancelled because the locks were still on in whois.

I had put in a ticket my registrar right at the beginning just to confirm the changes went through ok and they replied "Why would we do this?"

I replied and there was no response.

I left two messages with them and they didn't call back.

I made another support ticket, and then emailed cheapies.com (it's their reseller) asking if they can provide support because my registrar was unresponsive.

I got one response back finally saying they would have their techs look at it.

Then just now I get another response saying:

"Well no point in answering you, considering you go to other places and incorrectly state that we are unresponsive."

WTF IS THIS???

Can they legally fuck with me like this just because I want to leave them? Not to mention I still have $100 in my account there that they refuse to refund.

sounds like a terrible experience and it shows once again that everyone should use responsible/reliable companies for their domains

good luck in sorting this out, looks like you'll need it

anyone knows the law on this, btw?

is the registrar required to always approve the transfer request, assuming it is legit?
or is there a loophole that would allow a registrar to simply deny legit transfer request for whatever reason?

I assume first option is the case and the registrar has no right to act like that, in that case bodies like ICANN should be contacted, then again I have my doubts if ICANN really acts and helps in such invividual cases

domainnamesystems.com

They used to be good and had good support. Their prices haven't kept up and their website is a buggy PoS.

Check out their most recent email after I (politely) went off the handle:

"Well you arent exactly a customer if you are moving your domains away, so thats not necessarily a good bargaining chip. I mean what exactly makes you think that by telling us you are moving your domains away, you are a customer?"

After some emails back and forth, he said give it two days and when I see the lock off in whois, to retry the transfer.

If he had just said this in reply to my first support ticket two days ago, all this drama would have been avoided.

I have all this documented in emails. The guy who owns DomainNameSystems.com and Cheapies.com is just a huge asshole. I'm not the only one he's harassed for taking business elsewhere. I did eventually get my domains moved as ICANN has rules against this kind of thing, but he made it very difficult. It took me 2-3 weeks and a lot of stress.

At least his domains are still working on the old registrar. GoDaddy will just suspend your pages.

Cheapies / Domainnamesystems .... I had the exact same problem almost had to get a lawyer. It seems with the new auth code process that has been added to domains they're using that as a means to hold people and not allow them to transfer. I posted on webhostingtalk.com (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=621407) about my problems. It honestly took close too 20+ calls and emails before domainnamesystems (which is also owned by cheapies) released my domains. They ended up locking me out of my account afterwards and saying I abused there support system. I ended up filing a compliant with ICANN.

all my domains are with godaddy and namecheap, never again will I use a small company like cheapies or domainnamesytems. I started out with them cause some from the old webmaster chat recommended them about 5-6yrs ago.

anyway good luck, I got a pretty nasty email from them in the end and they close my account and relocked all my domains. with help from godaddy and namecheap i was still able to move all my domains in the end.
