Domain Name Values?

How is a domain name value determined? I am speaking of one with no traffic. I always see people selling domains and asking some crazy figures. Is it a matter of what someone is willing to pay? Or?

I am not an expert but I do dabble in the domain market and hold a small portfolio of domains. With non traffic domains domainers do value domains on several metrics including TLD, Length, alpha vs. non alpha characters and hyphens, keyword(s) (search term popularity), current market demand etc.

In the end a lot of it does boil down to what someone is willing to pay for the domain. Finding the end user for a great domain is always nice as they will usually pay much more then another reseller or investor.

Yes, that's always what it comes down to.

I figured this is what it all may boil down too. If you want it bad enough you will pay more than it's worth for a special project

Thanks for the reply

there is more too it.. this isn't my field of expertise, but people can figure out how many type ins that name gets on search engine and that figure helps determine price..

number of characters, keywords, search popularity, etc etc. lots of things factor in on it. brandability is kind of a sham, i mean you can brand ANY domain, but whether or not the domain rolls of the tongue or not also makes a big difference. In the end it is really just what someone is willing to pay for it though...

Relevance is relative. Say you own Goodyear Tires...
Tires.com would be a fantastic grab and worth an outrageous amount either oto you or to your competitors. Goodyear.com is an absolute necessity for your company; you can't let anyone else have it..

The best thing to do is pick a name that suits your site and that you like; something memorable. You won't get a lot of search engine traffic off the domain name alone anyway unless you can pay a LOT for a popular search term..

Yup, in the end all that matters is what someone will pay. I've had people offer $200 bucks for a domain and sold it later for 5k.

We've also turned down offers on domains for 10k plus because the domains are priceless to our operation. It all depends.
