When I look at that video I have to say "there but for the grace etc, etc".

If you look closely at the photo you can see the wing is actually flexed so it is definitely on the ground. Also, look at the wing tips - the one on the right wing tips out, the one on the left wing touching the ground is vertical.

Something similar happened to me once landing in fog on the East coast.

You couldn't see a thing until 10' off the deck. I look out the window and we're at about a 30 degree angle to the runway. I thought for sure we were going to wipe out on the grass. The pilot literally bounced the plane off the runway and hit it full throttle. We circled around and landed fine.

I'm surprised this guy tried so long before saying fuck it and hitting the throttle.

I am not certain, but due to the sheer size and force of it coming down, i would be willing to bet that once committed, you are committed, i was shocked to see him even able to bring it back up to air speed and climb.

The pilot may have done a good job getting it back into the air (I believe TOGA is Throttles Open Go Around or something like that) but it's no use calling him a hero when he probably SHOULDN'T HAVE TRIED TO LAND THERE in the first place!

CNN reported that wing did scrape, he went around again and landed safely. They said the cross-winds were gusting above 110 (not sure if that was MPH or KPH).

I would have to assume he was low fuel or that was the best weather airport in range. No way a pilot would *voluntarily* try that landing in those conditions.

Pilot is not the one making those decisions, especially in a weather like that. He was given a green light from the tower, or else he wouldn't have tried to land.

So the air traffic controller knows the intimate details and quirks of every model of aircraft landing there, like an experienced pilot would? Nup. They have some control over the landing such as choosing runways but ultimately the decision about whether it is safe to attempt a landing rests with the pilots.

I've seen some people say it may have been low on fuel which kinda limits their choices.

tower says clear for landing, computers handle the landing with that aircraft.

it appears that the pilot bailed the computer out on that one when the wind shifted at the last moment there.
