be interesting to see where the plane ended up. He had no choice but to abort the landing but scraping the wing down the runway like that had to fuck it up.

Did the wing actually touch the ground or is it just so close it's throwing up the water spray?

Hi guys,

just did some rain and strong CW spotting at EDDH HAM. Winds where up to at least 10bft in gusts and 8bft steady.

This LH bird came in good, but caught a gust. It stroke the ground with the left wing and after that was close to another hit on the right side before GA.

Close call for LH. Wing Vs. Ground @ Ham/EDDH
Crosswinds were above Airbus limits. Apparently an Airbus is harder to land in crosswinds than a Boeing due to adjustments their computers make.

Pulled from another board in regards to crosswinds

Quote:
I totally agree. As a former Boeing man the first on limits Xwind landing on a 320 at LHR scared me. The training I had on the sim was just that - training on the sim. I had full sidestick and the wing just kept on coming up. In the end I released some rudder (in panic. I might add, whilst trying to just fly the plane) and landed with a considerable amount of drift on.

Because of this experience I made some considerable noise in the office (British Airways) and was given the advice that I 'probably just wasn't applying the correct techniques'. In other words - just go away.

Fortunately I mentioned this experience of mine to a 320 'old hand' who advised that the rubbish taught in the sim is just that - the drift has to be taken off earlier in the 320 so as to give the 'bus' some small time to rethink.

I am certainly no expert, but I listened to that 'old hand' and his techniques seemed to work; or perhaps I never saw those particular wind conditions again.

Back on the Boeing when you move the ailerons the wing reacts as expected - always. If it didn't then TOGA is the answer. TOGA should have been the answer that day at LHR on the Bus I'm sure now - trouble is I believed the Airbus hype and BA training.

When I look at that video I have to say "there but for the grace etc, etc".

Regards
Exeng

If you look closely at the photo you can see the wing is actually flexed so it is definitely on the ground. Also, look at the wing tips - the one on the right wing tips out, the one on the left wing touching the ground is vertical.

Why? The pilot saved that shit from a disaster. If anything, i'd definatelly fly lufthansa.

Also, it's visible how the computers were trying to re-adjust the plane to the winds. Amazing vid.

Something similar happened to me once landing in fog on the East coast.

You couldn't see a thing until 10' off the deck. I look out the window and we're at about a 30 degree angle to the runway. I thought for sure we were going to wipe out on the grass. The pilot literally bounced the plane off the runway and hit it full throttle. We circled around and landed fine.

I'm surprised this guy tried so long before saying fuck it and hitting the throttle.

I am not certain, but due to the sheer size and force of it coming down, i would be willing to bet that once committed, you are committed, i was shocked to see him even able to bring it back up to air speed and climb.

They reported here that the pilot is getting some kind of reward, as he should. Pure mastery at driving a plane that size like that.

The pilot may have done a good job getting it back into the air (I believe TOGA is Throttles Open Go Around or something like that) but it's no use calling him a hero when he probably SHOULDN'T HAVE TRIED TO LAND THERE in the first place!

CNN reported that wing did scrape, he went around again and landed safely. They said the cross-winds were gusting above 110 (not sure if that was MPH or KPH).

I would have to assume he was low fuel or that was the best weather airport in range. No way a pilot would *voluntarily* try that landing in those conditions.

Pilot is not the one making those decisions, especially in a weather like that. He was given a green light from the tower, or else he wouldn't have tried to land.

So the air traffic controller knows the intimate details and quirks of every model of aircraft landing there, like an experienced pilot would? Nup. They have some control over the landing such as choosing runways but ultimately the decision about whether it is safe to attempt a landing rests with the pilots.

I've seen some people say it may have been low on fuel which kinda limits their choices.

WTF does that have to do with anything?

They know is it safe to land or not better then the pilot and what kind of weather they have on the strips. He was given a green light from the tower 100%. 0% pilot responsibility on this one.

tower says clear for landing, computers handle the landing with that aircraft.

it appears that the pilot bailed the computer out on that one when the wind shifted at the last moment there.
