You can look at it this way - US president's salary is $400 000 a year (plus bonuses). $500k a year is a very nice coin.

I don't know you, so no insult intended here... but if you're making that kind of money why are you working for someone else? You couldn't hire someone making that kind of money for less than 10k/wk. Are you being paid 10k week?

I really don't see any employee making that kind of money.

hey dig, no need to go into details on gfy. smart people work with other smart people.

wealth is like beauty, in the eye of the beholder and is all relative. but yeah $500k is a lot of money.

this reminded me of a story about kerry packer, at the time australias richest man:

(copy and pasted)

Packer got into an altercation with a loud-mouthed Texan at a blackjack table in Vegas.

The story goes that the brash cowboy yelled at Packer "Don't you know who I am boy? I'm worth $60 million pardner!" The big Australian simply turned and replied "$60 Million? Toss you for it?"

Packer also reportedly took his losses on the chin and was also generous when sharing his good fortune. He once casually asked a waitress how big her mortgage was and then without another word left her a tip for the exact amount she owed.

polish_aristocrat 03-01-2008 03:43 AM

I'd say $500k per year is more than ~99% of GFY'ers make

fluffygrrl 03-01-2008 04:12 AM

For work, it's great pay.

For ownership, it's meh. Just enough to qualify you for private banking, nothing more.

He was surely a legend alright.

You can live a pretty good lifestyle on $500k/year.

Say you want to live in a million dollar home and put down 20%. Your mortgage and taxes will be about $5500/month. Say you spent maybe $7k/month (that's not a very conservative lifestyle) on top of that (could include a pretty nice care). Pay about $170k/year in taxes. You are still saving $200k/year.

Eman - PG 03-01-2008 06:55 AM

99th percentile of US networth = 6M USD
99th percentile US yearly gross income = 1.4M USD/year
99.9th percentile US yearly gross income = 6.5M USD/year

Sosa 03-01-2008 08:04 AM

I'd take it

pornguy 03-01-2008 08:07 AM

Only the gazillionairs on this board will find it to be chump change

cosis 03-01-2008 08:14 AM

comeplay 03-01-2008 11:29 AM

he probably gets a decent salary plus a percentage of the affiliates he manages to consider 500k chump change

D 03-01-2008 11:32 AM

I'd say that anyone that calls 500k "chump-change" isn't the brightest.

SleazyDream 03-01-2008 11:37 AM

it's not sooo much about the amout to me as it's if the person made it self employed or not

Bandiz 03-01-2008 11:48 AM

500k$/year is too much for one men. But if you are living noramly life , have children and wife , and going to job every day , so it's normal.

baddog called it chump change. go back and read the thread.

sortie 03-01-2008 11:55 AM

That's great impressive money to be earned by any kind of work.

The fact that there are plenty of business owners out there that make it has
nothing to do with how impressive it is.

I have never done it and seriously doubt that I ever will.
I will keep trying though. :)

american pervert 03-01-2008 01:19 PM

I like money

Vick! 03-01-2008 01:24 PM

Well, this is good income.

Diligent 03-01-2008 02:31 PM

Well, for an INDIVIDUAL, regardless whether an employee or business owner... it's an awesome income!

If it's a business owner taking out that much, *I* would be kind of impressed... I could only assume he/she takes that out because the company is doing well enough to support that with no problems, rather than assuming he/she is stupid..

(Of course, there are some stupid ones as well - but I'd assume the "healthy-wealthy company" before that.)

Did he? I dunno... I didn't really read the first thread (as I hadn't finished watching the series of debate videos yet) or this one in any detail... But, if I understand the situation now, you're saying those were his words, not yours... which I'm not making judgment on, in the least.

No insults meant to anyone. I was just responding to the original post in this thread directly... with no prejudice attached... I didn't even know what the question was in relation to at the time.

And, in that regard, US$500k is a sizable chunk of change, I'd think...

You could pay for 4 years of education at an Ivy League school 5-10 times over with it.

You could fund several business ventures - like build an entire small brewery or start a production company.

In a more charitable regard:

You can run an entire homeless shelter for 5 years.

You could feed over 2000 African families for a year.

Seems it could mean a lot to a lot of people.

I'd think even someone in Bill Gates' position would think 500k is a valuable asset.

Without singling anyone out, anyone calling it "chump change" needs to re-evaluate their values, imho. And that's all I meant.

Now whether anyone here actually did that or not is another matter entirely, and something that I have no opinion on one way or the other. :)

esnem 03-01-2008 03:07 PM

D, he started this thread because of the other thread. he used a quote of mine out of context in this thread to try and make it look like i said what's in the title of his thread.

he confused arrogance with ignorance. there is quite a difference. arrogance can take you much farther than ignorance can in business. he is too ignorant to realize that so sometimes people half his age need to point it out. :2 cents:

500k is nice, but definitely not satisfactory.
