Damn Horny Woodpeckers

Damn woodpecker woke me up at the crack of dawn this morning. This time of year the horny guys are trying to attract girlfriends. There's one that's decided that some piece of metal flashing on my house makes a beautiful and 'sexy' noise. Sounds like a friggin jackhammer and it's driving my cats crazy. They keep running around looking at the ceiling.

I thought you had a Koi pond.

I'm on my way over.

Bringing a fishing pole, a frying pan, and a 12 gauge.

Try living in a wood house with giant (http://www.houstonaudubon.org/index....Group/Home.htm) bastards

The entire house literally shakes when they hit it. When I was out of town for a while, one left two 2 inch diameter and 2 inch deep holes in the front of the house. And it's illegal to shoot the little shits.

Apparently they are afraid of snakes. A neighbor of mine went and bought about 30 plastic snakes from Walmart and threw them on her roof. She pretty much forgot they were there until another neighbor called her to inform her she might want to check on her "snake problem" ;)

Got rid of the koi a couple of years ago. Went down to the pond one morning to the scene of a massacre. After fending off, raccoons, eagles, great blue heron and more for 5 years, it was a little river otter that found it's way in under the netting and had a heyday.

Now we toss about 50 8-10 inch trout every spring at $2 a piece. No netting, etc. They are too smart for the raccoons and the heron. Eagles love them though.

I have a shake roof and wood siding. They don't mess with the wood..just this metal flashing.

I prefer the Kingfisher that comes and sits on my deck and dives for trout. He's a blast to watch.

If you build the walls of the pond at a 90 degree drop off, coons can't get to the fish. The otter is a tough one though. I can understand the move to trout.

Get some pics of the Kingfisher for us.

The issue with the pond walls is that the pond is lined with rocks and large gravel. A 90degree angle to the side would mean just seeing liner on the sides. I only lost 1 small koi to raccoons in 6 years so I think the koi figured out how to say in the deeper part when they were around. The otter.. forget it... dang critter was at it just for sport. Under the net.. drag out a koi.. big ones at that.. take a bite or two.. then in for another one.

After 7+ years of having the water feature (over 7000 gallons total), it's there now more for asthetics than having purrty fishies. The mass of trout are more fun too.

When I'm home they take off as soon as I hit the wall. This is quite an experience for the uninitiated in the house watching me: House shakes, I get up, run to a wall, hit it and this screeching sound comes from the woods as it flies away......I guess I should be thankful they are as big as they are since I CERTAINLY know when they start pecking.

Damage happens when I'm not home. I have noticed they've started going just on the side where the dogs aren't - maybe I need to extend the fence area to cover the whole house.

I had one of those little bastards drumming my house too. I took an alt. approach. If you search on the web, you can find .wav/.mp3's from some tech device that plays sounds to scare birds. In case of the woodpecker, there are two of them. One is a sound of an injured one, the other is a coopers hawk - one of their predator birds.

Just burn a quick CD with injured/15 mins silence/predator/15 min silence, get a portable cd player and some computer speakers you don't care about, put it outside where they're being a problem, start it on loop, crank up volume (as it won't get too loud w/ unpowered speakers) and walk away for awhile. (make sure you are using an a/c adapter on cd player so batteries don't die off) I went this route, as every time I walked outside to catch them, they'd fly away too quickly to be able to get a shot off them.

They haven't returned since... Pigeons on the other hand, get your bbgun ready.

Haven't seen a woodpecker in ages, seems like it's only overweight, half dead pigeons in Prague.

I am only looking forward once it will be a bit warmer to spend some time again at the cottage far from here.

I always get nervous from the silence over there - no car after 10 PM, nothing at all - the only thing you hear is wind and trees or the fire if you need to eat or it's cold in the evening.

You don't even want to play music, the silence is too rare.
