I second the recommendation to go to a local microbrewery. I generally prefer mixed drinks, but we have a local steakhouse that brews 6-7 beers and they were all enjoyable. It irks me when I'm eating there and someone at my table orders a Bud Light when you can literally see the brewing room 10 feet away.

Excluding the obscure & unique micro-brewery beers (Ales and Lagers) Kilkenny is the only beer for me.

It is a very creamy and smooth Irish cream (red) ale that's a 4.3% alc/vol.

Like Guinness, it contains a nitrogen 'widget' that gives it the perfect head each time you pour one. But, unlike Guiness, it does not taste like sewer (soy/soya) sauce. It is a real treat and all the people I have introduced it to have cursed me for getting them hooked!

It must be extremely cold, as well I suggest pouring it in to a frosted mug.

those beers you drink are about as cheap as they get so...you are kind of limiting yourself as in general with beer (as most things) you pay for what you get.

here are my favorite beers in that price range that you should be able to find at your grocery store:

Henry Wienhard's Private Reserve
Red Stripe
Labatt's Blue
Shiner Bock

Other personal favorite that cost a bit more (but are well worth it):

Newcastle, Guinness, and Swithwick's (For the UK, Irish types)
Blue Moon
Red Tail
Stella Artois
Anderson Valley Summer Solstice or Winter Solstice
Anchor Steam or Boch
4 Peaks Kiltlifter
Bohemia or Pacifico Clara for Mexican
Dogfish Head Brown Ale

And a whole variety of Belgian Ales

Meeting your criteria: Bass and Guinness.

The important thing is that you're trying new beers, so try them all, I say. I've easily sampled over 1,000 varieties of beer in my life, and I'm no where near done tasting new flavors.

I'm decently proficient at recommending beers to people based on what non-beer items they deem tasty. Hit me up on ICQ if you think that kind of advice would work for you.

Cheers.

You must be unfamiliar with real American beer.

Plenty of Belgian-style ales throughout the states, for starters.

How about lite beers?

Thanks for all the advice everyone. It appears that Guiness got the most votes so that will probably be the first new one I try. But I have a really good list now that should keep me busy and buzzed for awhile.

I was suprised at how many people suggested good ol' Budweiser. I'm not a big fan of Bud Lite but may have to try a regular Bud now.

I also forgot to mention a third criteria: it would be better for my waistline if the beer you recommend was a "lite" one. I didn't catch too many lite beers mentioned so far... is there not one out there that tastes good?

Do yourself a favor if going to try Guinness. Go to a bar that has it on tap and does a slow pour. It used to be that you had to do a slow pour or you could not serve it. But with all the impatient yuppies that couldn't wait, they decided to allow the quick pour. It is not the same thing.

Re: the waistline.

Many years ago I was a devout Bud drinker. Swore by it. When I was in my late 20's I worked out every other day and had put myself on a low carb, high protein diet.

Of course, this meant I was going to have to find a substitute if I ever wanted to drink beer again. There were limited "lite" beers available. Bud and Coors I believe were the first.

Being a Bud man there was no way in hell I was going to drink Coors anything, and Bud Lite was terrible. Plus the carbs were pretty high. I checked out this new beer, Miller Lite.

The commercials were right, it did taste great and it was less filling. It also was the lowest in carbs.

However, it isn't really the beer you have to worry about as much as it is the snacking many feel the need to do when drinking it.

If you're looking for Light beers, specifically, the _only_ one that I can really say I enjoy (unless it's in a "I could use a glass of water, but this beer will do" - kinda way) is "Sam Adams Light" (miller has "Lite" trademarked, I think). Pretty decent beer.

Regarding Guinness: if you, at first, find it too bitter (as some people who try it for the first time do), my advice is to - at least to begin with - drink it without letting any of the beer's head get past your lips. It's a trick I learned in the initiation of many people to Irish Stouts, and it works well, I think. Later, you'll no doubt come to treasure the off-white fluff... but, to start, you might wanna avoid it. Depends on your individual taste.

Regarding Budweiser: if you feel adventurous - not as easy to find, but there is a beer in the U.S.A. called "Czechvar." It's the beer that Budweiser, for lack of a better word, stole the recipe and name from when the American brewery was first founded. In Europe (and elsewhere), it's called "Budvar," but they had to change the name for distribution in the States due to jacked-up trademark law. The beer is along the same lines as Bud, but a much much better beer overall, imho... as originals tend to be.

Maybe a dumb question, but is Czechvar a Czech beer? I heard that the strongest beer in the world is made by Czechs and I tried one once (forgot the name). After about three sips I felt like I had drank 4 American beers.
