I'm a cell phone n00b, can I icq with one?

Well... Can one use icq with a cell phone? I'm finding myself doing so much biz via ic and being on the road much more.... I never really got into the txting craze with phones and such...

Any suggestions? I know they all use aim...

Depends on the phone and provider, there are some native apps for palm and windows mobile and some are browser based like meebo.

iPhone w/BeeJive (web app with aim/icq/msn/& others) or hacked iPhone w/Apollo app. Either one works

Some of them.

AIM and ICQ use the same underlying OSCAR protocol - but that doesn't matter. Most phones use SMS for messages as a gateway because then they can charge you per message. See if you can find a phone that has a TCP gateway, or functionality to do so. My shitty old Nokia (no longer produced) phone had 64k of RAM, but with T-Mobile T-Zones, I had unmetered internet for $4.95/mo. With it, and $20 worth of shareware, I could read my email, ICQ/AIM, and (barely) browse the web.

Check another place that starts with the name 'howard'; I can't mention it directly because it's a forum. The search term you want to use might include the term 'mobile phone.' They'll help you out, and are pretty damn knowledgeable.

I use this on my treo and it is pretty bad-ass becuase it supports multiple accounts on multiple systems (blackberry,palm,winmobile,j2me,brew,symbian phone on yahoo, msn, aol, icq, jabber, googletalk, lotusnotes,LCS,and SIP)

The cool thing is that their server works as a proxy. you contact the server via your cell phone, the server logs into your IM account. So what's the benefit? You will always look like you are online and available. SO what happens when you take your phone out of data mode to make calls? it disconnects your phone from the server but keeps your status shown as online. When someone sends you a message, the service sends you a text message. You can reply back with a text which the server re-writes to your IM account. You do need an unlimited messaging plan on your phone or this will cost you plenty.

Why in the world would I want ICQ on my cell phone? So I have yet another place to check messages?
