Love Platoon, great fucking movie. The two parts that really stick with you are when Elias gets gunned down while running towards the chopper, and when Bunny bashes the kid's head in with the butt of his shotgun.

Platoon is a great movie, but I would suggest watching Apocalypse Now once more and not thinking in terms of war movies. Just watch the insanity of it all....

Pretty good but not terribly realistic. I say "We were Soldiers" was most technically and historically accurate film about Viet Nam.

i havent seen apocalypse now in ages, but the last time ive seen it was that redux version. All i can remember from that version is that the diner at those french(?) people lasted forever. Dont ask me details i cant remember the flick that good anymore... But i recently watched platoon again and i love that flick.

Platoon is AN now without the discussions, without the psychoanalysis, without the absurd scenes and without the insanity and without the beautiful camera shots.
Platoon is an impressive war flick...AN is an impressive war flick with a lot more stuff going on than just the shooting. |

Platoon rocks.
I also love The Thin Red Line and Full Metal Jacket. Haven´t watched Apocalypse Now. For those that are in to these kind of movies, see if you can find "All Quiet on the Western Front". But try to get the 1930 version, not the 1979 one. It´s about World War I. It an awesome movie. I couldnt find it anywhere in my country and I downloaded it over emule ages ago. It´s one of the few movies I can watch over and over again. |

My .02 is that it was very over-rated, certainly not deserving an Oscar. Charlie Sheen's acting was brutal, and most of the others - particularly Berenger and Dillon - were a bit too over-the-top.
There are a lot better war films, even ones focusing on Vietnam. A few good points were the scene were Sheen was falling asleep in the bush and, seemingly, imagining the Vietnamese soldiers coming through the mist. And the scene were Dafoe was being chased and ultimately shot in the field. Very well shot and directed. |
