Oh my, just watched it, and I think it comes close to being number one, perhaps number 1.
So fucking amazing, the story line, the actors, the emotions, the soundtrack.

I just love it

Charlie Sheen
Willem Dafoe
Forest Whitaker
Johnny Depp
Kevin Dillon
John C. McGinley
Tom Berenger

Dirty F 02-21-2008 06:48 PM

Awesome movie but personally if we're talking about war flicks i prefer Apocalypse Now.

tony286 02-21-2008 06:49 PM

a great film its shame oliver stone lost his touch.

Elli 02-21-2008 06:50 PM

It's definitely one of my favourite war movies along with Apocalypse Now. It's pretty close to flawless.

scottybuzz 02-21-2008 06:59 PM

Im glad you all agree, I am going to bed now, but I just had to post that.

You bought Platoon when you were 9 years old? You sure it wasn't Platoon the video game for nintendo?

.~. 02-21-2008 10:01 PM

The only thing I would change is the scene where "willem defoe" is gunned down by the Vietnamese AFTER "Barnes" said that he was already dead.

You posted the pic that bothers me.

It was just so hokey the way he kept popping his body as if it was being struck by bullets. Then, the shot where he raises his hands over his head, gets popped again and drops makes me think, WHY????

It just didn't need to be so hokey. It could have been more effective if they didn't push it to the limit.

I love that movie!!!!!!

The first "half" of full metal jacket is superb. The second half is just "good".

Although it loses impact the more you watch it.

I do love "Full Metal Jacket"!!!!

.~. 02-21-2008 10:05 PM

And how about Kevin Dillon?

Bunny?

Come on Bunny, leave now and nobody saw a thing.

Mutt 02-21-2008 10:08 PM

powerful movie - i was about the same age as the guys in the movie when it came out and i just kept thinking how surreal it would be to one day be in the US and the next day dropped into a jungle horror show. scared me shitless and not long after I went to the Vietnam Memorial and saw all these middle aged vets, some in wheel chairs and it was chilling.

terrible war that should never have been fought - politics at its worst.

As a movie and story I like Deer Hunter better.

crockett 02-21-2008 10:21 PM

The best part.. was during the fighting at the end where the base was over run. They call in jets to fire bomb their own base. The soldiers are all burnt up yet all the plants are still bright green.

Other than that minor annoying detail it wasn't a bad movie..

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 02-21-2008 10:23 PM

Platoon is a classic, as is Full Metal Jacket, can't recommend them enough!

20 years from now expect to see movies like this, but filmed in the desert.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 02-21-2008 10:33 PM

Why are you making it a question?

We all know its fucking great.

needlive 02-21-2008 10:34 PM

Amazing movie.

Btw I like Charlie Sheen too but why are all nice actors alcoholics / drug addicts?

Violetta 02-22-2008 12:12 AM

I havent seen that movie in 10 years... gotta buy it!

GrouchyAdmin 02-22-2008 12:22 AM

Funniest thing I've seen in years.

theking 02-22-2008 12:39 AM

Platoon is entertaining...but keep in mind that no movie about war can give an accurate portrayal of what combat is really like. The smells...the sound...the blood and guts...and the misery involved just cannot be portrayed.

I should have also added the real emotions of real people...not that of actors pretending to emote what they think are real emotions of real people.

As opposed to a pretenious post on the internet masquerading as a pretentious statement on the internet.

WWC 02-22-2008 02:05 AM

one of my favorite flicks.....

Sarah_Jayne 02-22-2008 03:02 AM

You know? I still haven't seen it. It is probably the first film I remember winning the best picture Oscar but I was so young that I wasn't allowed to see it. It is only in the past few years that I saw Full Metal Jacket (and enjoyed a lot).

Davy 02-22-2008 05:17 AM

Platoon is great.
I love war movies.

Some other great ones:
The thin red line: I love how peaceful this movie starts.
Paths of glory (by Stanley Kubrick)

scottybuzz 02-22-2008 07:33 AM

the question i was thinking today is why are there no movies like platoon, full metal jacket and acopolypse now coming out today?

Sosa 02-22-2008 07:44 AM

Because today's movies glorify war and show it more of "good guys vs. bad guys" type of story, with lots of things blowing up, and no real character development or any real critizism towards the war itself. One horrible war movie that comes to mind is Blackhawk Down.

Scott McD 02-22-2008 08:37 AM

Haven't watched it in years. Might make a point of doing so in the next few days...

Hey man, you have excellent taste for sure. Charlie Sheen was allegedly stoned throughout the making of the film:

I am aware that Oliver Stone served in Vietnam. Were you just making a statement or do you have a point to make?

I guess they are worried about either being politically correct or there is not enough money to be made with a topic we can see live everyday on the internet.

The only current war movie I can remember seeing recently was Jarhead with Jake Gyllenhaal. The damn screen was so bright with all the desert scenes that I had to wear sunglasses to watch it! :upsidedow

As far as the story line I couldn't tell you a thing about the movie except the part when Jake's character was on the "Burn the Shit with Diesel" detail cleaning the outdoor toilets. :Oh crap

It really confuses me that anyone would think that Platoon is a better movie than Apocalypse Now. Platoon is great, but AN is one of the greatest movies ever made.

It wasn't just a war film, it was so much more. And the message / conflicts presented in that movie were critical to war / social commentary back then, as well as today in concern with Iraq.

It also broke down the lines of sanity. I can't think of one movie that has even come close to it, aside from even war films.

To be honest, I don't think any movie challenges it, including Godfather.

karlos 02-22-2008 02:47 PM

oliver stone and charlie sheen went straight from making platoon to working on wall st. They were a good combination...

i dont know, maybe im too young to understand AN. properly, In a way I thought it was quite strange (surfing during battle etc).

I just rate Platoon higher, so brilliant
