Do you think Starbucks regrets having T-Mobile as their wireless internet provider?
Starbucks always seems to be ahead of the game. But it still surprises me when I am in one and I have to pay for Wireless Internet access. I mean, this made sense when it first came out as they were ahead of the curve.
But now, Wi-Fi is free everywhere. Jack in the Box announced this morning that they are rolling out free Wi-Fi in 9 of their California restaurants; with more to come. Not too mention every time a mom and pop coffee shop springs up, wireless always seems to be free. I avoid them now because of it. I hate having to figure out what my T-Mobile account info is. It just seems outdated for a coffee shop to still charge for access. I bet a lot of people avoid them over it.

yah i saw that the other day. some cities here have their own free wifi city wide. not sure where they are going with that unless its some sort of premium uber fast connections to brag about. to me it just looked like a reg wifi connect though.

I haven't read such, but it would make complete sense. I mean, charging for Wi-Fi can't be good for business.

Yeah, well even regardless of coffee quality, I would take inferior coffee over paying for Wi-Fi. It's just me, I can't stand the process of paying for it. And that adds up.

Here, the starbucks are hit and miss, none of the kentucky side SB's have free wifi, a couple on the cincinnati side do. BUT on the ky side, there are some other "open" wifi's if you search them while in SB. Or just do what I do and use a sprint EVDO cars... seems to be a lot faster than any of the free Wifi spots around here period

That was in 2003 that Starbuck's bought Seattle's Best. I also think Starbucks tastes over roasted. BUT... the Christmas Blend this past season was really good. I too, hate paying for WiFi. McDonald's WiFi works in the parking lot, but of course it looks funny sitting in your car on the laptop ![]() |

As many times as I have been to a Starbucks I have yet to go there for the Internet connection.
Well, I may have sat down in OKC, but I used my own wireless. |

Also, sometimes on a Saturday morning I like ordering coffee, a whole-wheat muffin with a touch of honey, and just sitting at the table online.

Also Baddog, to follow that point. I have an iPhone and surely more and more iPhone-esq devices are in the works. I love being able to pop online wherever I am at.

I offered free wifi in my deli, which is close to a college campus. I did quite a bit of business from people coming in just because of it being available.

Maybe they bought it in the US but they just bought up all the Canadian franchises back from the Canadian holding co that owned it.

I actually really hate Starbucks for doing this, as virtually every other chain coffee shop buys and uses arabica beans that taste so much better. Starbucks is thinking about its bottom line, and not about the products it serves. Hence I will always go somewhere else. As for the T-Mobile service i was forced to use it last time i was in LA for webmaster access last year and its a fucking nuisance and takes ages to download stuff. Not worth paying $10 a day for (or however much it was), thats for sure. |

They said that complete details haven't been finalized yet. They are switching to ATT and are thinking about giving customers 2 hours free access if you have a Starbucks card with a balance on it. They may start out like that but it will not be long before it is totally free.

While you are arguing that paying for WiFi is bad for business because other restaurants offer it for free, I have read many articles from the coffee shops perspective saying the exact opposite. I keep seeing them talk about how terrible WiFi is for business because all it does is keeps freeloaders taking up space in the restaurant while other customers are pushed away due to lack of space.

Having ATT's DSL gives you free access to their network of WiFi hotspots, I would assume this will include the Starbucks as well.
The Verizon EVDO is typically 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps and if you exceed 5 GB/line/month, they reserve the right to reduce throughput speeds to a maximum of approximately 200 Kbps. |
