3:10 to yuma ending question (don't read if you haven't watched it and want to)
The film was great up until the ending and wanted to see if anyone understand the ending.
The train that pulled up had a prisoner car, but yet no guards. But that's not the confusing part.. At the end, Crowe's character shoots his gang and then turns himself in. During the story, we know he was supposed to go to Yuma to be hanged. Why did he kill his gang that was loyal to him? Fight the ending!

I think he mentioned that he was at that prison already 3 times. (and obviously broke out)
he turned himself in, imho because he promised to the guy, who was to collect the reward (for his family) And he shot his gang, because they shot the guy in the back, even through he clearly was on the train by his own will.

Watch the movie again, and this time listen to what Christian Bale is saying.

Crowe: "I admire you farmer man. I shot my whole gang down because I respect you, and it makes me very sad to see you get killed right before you completed what you had originally set out to do. Now I'm going to get on this train car and go through the motions like I am going to jail, even though I know I'll be breaking out soon, and probably get a new gang. (whistle)Come here horsey, follow this train so the audience will know all of this without me having to spell it out for them."

I think he was getting off when the train was out of site, that's why his horse was following.

I really don't know what there was to miss. Through the movie he came to respect what buddy was doing for his family and he was in a way envious of what he had and was putting himself on the line for. He was knowingly putting his life on the line for his family, so crowe's character dug up that one little bit of good the kid was yapping about the whole time and let the farmer put hm on the train knowing he could break free again anyhow. when his crew wound up shooting him Croweunload on them for killing the man he came to respect. He got on the trin so that he would be delivered and the bounty paid to the family so buddy's death would not be without honor.
It was a great movie, i like westerns. We need more good westerns... |

Christian Bale was a loser all his life.
Crowe wanted to give him a chance so his son would be proud of him. |

Crowe shoots his gang because he was mad they killed Bale, and there was no way he could get on the train and look weak to his gang. He wanted to forfill what Bale started so Bale's family would get the money. Basically he grew a conscious and did a good deed. Like he said earlier in the movie doing good deeds is contagious and he couldn't do anything good and run a gang like that. He also knew he was going to hop off the train around the bend, so he wasn't going to end up in jail but he could no longer be the bad guy he was and what was needed to run his gang. hope that helps. next time no more bathroom breaks for you, you missed some key parts

I thought the movie made no sense. It was much of people doing random shit that had nothing to do with their character. Their motives where complete random and made the ending completely retarded.

Yeah, I think he turned himself in with the expressed intent on springing out again, but the cowboy getting his reward. I loved the scene of him whistling for the horse ;)

I just watched this movie and enjoyed it even though I'm not really a fan of Westerns.
To correct some people above though, Wade didn't get on the train so Evans could get the $200 - Evans already took care of his family by having Butterfield promise to give hsi wife $1000 (as well as keep Hollander away from his land, etc...) Wade got on the train so Evans' son would have something to be proud of his father for (knowing he could easily escape as he's done so before, especially with how lax the train security was heh). I'd say killing his gang wasn't out of fear of showing weakness to them, but just out of rage at the fact they killed this decent man he had just done a good deed for and who he wanted to see return home to his family.
