I just watched this movie and enjoyed it even though I'm not really a fan of Westerns.
To correct some people above though, Wade didn't get on the train so Evans could get the $200 - Evans already took care of his family by having Butterfield promise to give hsi wife $1000 (as well as keep Hollander away from his land, etc...)
Wade got on the train so Evans' son would have something to be proud of his father for (knowing he could easily escape as he's done so before, especially with how lax the train security was heh).
I'd say killing his gang wasn't out of fear of showing weakness to them, but just out of rage at the fact they killed this decent man he had just done a good deed for and who he wanted to see return home to his family.
