We already have 1 semantics lawyer on this board, plus we all know any infusion of leaves, herbs, twigs, berries, and such counts as a formal definition of a tea.

Wrong.

Tea is an infusion made by steeping processed leaves, buds, or twigs of the tea bush, Camellia sinensis, in hot water for a few minutes.

Herbal tea is bullshit and not a real tea.

Thanks for the wiki reference which anyone is allowed to alter or change. Yes that is one definition of tea and the absolute number 1 version of it. However if you bother to check a dictionary:

Any of various beverages, made as by steeping the leaves of certain plants or by extracting an infusion especially from beef.

Any of various plants having leaves used to make a tea like beverage.

At the same time one can make a fertilizer tea such as a worm castings tea or a compost tea, neither of which uses leaves from the tea bush yet are correctly used in the form of context and word choice. So one again its semantics.

Way to get technical on what was supposed to be a simple Q!

Does tea go bad? I have some that's a couple of years old (loose leaf) that's been kept in an airtight plastic container. I'm going to make some - figured at the worst it will have lost some flavor. Sure smells good :)

TubeTitans_SusieQ 02-14-2008 12:44 PM

I have been drinking tea since a baby, every morning and night, it is really relaxing and soothing, I really dont like coffee but sometimes when i need to wake up in the morning its a good thing to have. Theres a store in Orlando called Teavana, I believe, they have loose tea and they make the greatest combinations.

Viper.X08 02-14-2008 12:47 PM

It does lose flavour. They say that tea shouldn't sit for more than 2 months in an airtight, dark container to be enjoyed properly. But if it's sat for ages on the store shelf before you took it home... it could be ancient!

It doesn't ever go bad, per se. It just doesn't have flavour anymore.

Green tea a fair amount, when I'm not drinking coffee. I should start drinking something without caffeine before bed though - have trouble sleeping some nights.

falcao 02-19-2008 12:30 AM

AAAAHHHHHH! I was born in England and grew up having to drink a cup of tea every day before leaving the house until I was 13 years old, when I moved to the U. S. and A. I have not had a cup of tea since, and I've never had a cup of coffee. Juice and water for me, baby!

Oh Yah. Green tea is very mild in flavor if you like that or you can also go for tetley tea if you like it strong and potent.
