The problem with a studio is having your product look like it was shot in a studio. Nothing looks lamer than the same cheezy backgrounds.

This is true ... but building various setups would be cheaper. That plus I have reached a point where I worry about zoning etc etc

I absolutely disagree ...

MOST porn looks like it was shot in someone's front room or bedroom ... it always looks like it was shot by a bunch of amateurs... too many idiots making bad porn.

I think a studio is the perfect way to go ... since he can customise the sets with far more flexability. No more fucking in the living room!

We're looking at studio space, too.

Probably open warehouse space that we can build sets in...

And add a shower, makeup room, seating area, reception space, and office for meetings.

Anything WELL DONE is not what I'm talking about ... but too many have the couch, fake window and plastic plant in a corner look.

When i built my first studio it was in part of a 40,000 .00 sq ft warehouse in Sudbury Suffolk. We bricked off an area 45'-00 wide by 80'-00 to use as the main studio and then added a darkroom store area and models changing rooms.

I agree with the comments about studios always looking the same, so we built a huge rotating platform some 25'-00 diameter and on that built 3 sets, we set up ambient lighting off of the platform so that when we rotated it to a new set we already had basic lighting for each setting. It saved us hours of time.
The platform was made using a huge truck bearing that weighed 200lb and set up rubber wheels around the edge of the platform disk to help support the floor area. Its still there after 20 years so i guess we did a good job ?

Here's something to think about -- make SURE the landlord knows what you're doing in there.

Serious.

Same here. But it's currently on hold. Mainly because I am still researching streaming radio, and music production facilities. Once I get done with that, the next step is a studio, or building, where I can house everything.

Between the web hosting, music productions facilities, streaming radio set up, and for shooting mainstream/porn. So we can put the TOEtal business in one building. Properly zoned.

We have a warehouse with a different set in each corner, we have some fixed overhead lights and the cameras and light boxess in the middle of the room and just turn them to the set we are shooting.

During the summer season we rent a 30,000sq. ft. old industrial warehouse across town for production. Its in a somewhat crappy neighbourhood, has no heat/water - so we get it for a helluva price. The owner simply uses the place as a tax write-off and it sits empty much of the time anyways.

The second floor has skylights (great natural lighting), exposed brick and peeling paint on the walls. Ideal for our type of photography.

I recommend finding a place in a low-rent neighbourhood - perhaps a location that's not much good for anything else but for a studio. Don't be shy about haggling over prices.

Totally agree with you there.

I got a place in Vegas about 5 mins off the strip for a good price, I am in the right zoning and the landlord knows what we do. I think the neighbouring companies might know too, but obviously we are not advertising what we do.

We have a reception/green room area with a flat screen for the boyfriends and suitcase pimps. The next area is where we have our editing suites. We have 4 stations set up, 2 are dedicated to editing, one is for Bob the programmer and one for myself.

In the back we have the warehouse with a roll up door and 16 ft ceilings. At this time we have 3 sets built in there but we have room for more. We are constantly thinking of new set ideas and colors. We have plenty of room to drive in a couple of exotic cars and I would like to build a shop with some of those with a nice checkerboard floor sometime soon.

I am building a make up station in the back as well. (almost done)
i shot in houses and apts for years and I couldn't be happier with this place, it gives us a lot of new options and whenever I feel I overshot a set I change it out. We have "flats" and working in that type of environment is very nice.

I am open if any shooters in las Vegas or traveling to Vegas need a place to shoot other then a dull hotel room.

Will post some pics soon.

Sebastian
