The real pie consists only of those sites people want to keep going back to month after month after month. The rest of the pie is rather irrelevant.

the only thing i can see affect avs is when everyone owns a pass.
i might have missed something, but my understanding is that the number of sites on an AVS is not going to affect the profitability of that AVS. and as a bonus, it is now harder to start a new AVS

i think the biggest looming shake up will be with freesites if paysites are forced to re-address their business model

maybe I was responding to a spam query about AVS's with a bunch of AVS spam in their sig, with my own bit of "get in before the goldrush" with my own spam in my sig. (even if my wording wasn't great - i've just done an all-nighter.)

but i do stand by that - when the gov scare of last year pushed a lot of people to AVS the pie did get smaller.. the thing that helps is the emergence of new AVS's so people have to keep on getting new ID's if they particularly want to enter your site, and the fact that half the AVS game is the fact that you've got access to dyed-in-the-wool online credit card users even without front end sign-ups..
Anyone who I talk to knows how much I push AVS as an option. I design AVS sites amongst other things.. im hardly going to shoot myself in the foot.

I dont think the sky is falling.. you never know how these new regs will shake out in the end..

We have officially been told that basically we will just have a licensing fee and not a very large one .. I will negotiate that later out of the fees we pay for processing.. this biz is all about deals and dealing..

I do realize that this will affect certain people worse than others but this in the end will probably help this biz more than hurt it.

it won't happen.. firstly, as eru said, even though the internet is expanding far more slowly these days there are always new users and if the market becomes saturated with passes then the webmaster need for sign-ups will mean a new AVS program starts which no-one has an ID with to repeat the cycle.. The only thing is is AVS member attrition and how many different AVS's a member will comfortably join.. i think this will grow if smaller paysites take this route, especially with a bit of innovation and a move away from 300 pics being the be and end all of a premium site.

if premium AVS sites become more complex, wouldn't that shrink the profit margins with higher running and set up costs?

yes it would, but it would be offset by volume.

If somebody has a paysite and doesn't want to pay the fees to the CC proccessor I think you'll start to see more 'amateur' and 'paysite' type of sites online as Premium AVS sites for sure. There are benefits for these webmasters though, one is they don't have to worry about credit card processing, they don't have to worry about customer support, and if they ever have a technical question about their site they can always contact the AVS (e-mail/ICQ) for assistance. If you have a website and are considering moving it from Paysite to Premium AVS then I recommend looking at all AVS companies out there to see how much you'll be getting paid per each recurring sale. I'm sure you'll find an AVS that pays near what your charging right now. For example... if you're charging $19.95 and the processor charges 15% you're really making $16.95 per each sale (on top of that any % held back for possible charge backs).

yeah, we produce a variety.

as FreeNetPass Steve pointed out with his comment on small paysites moving to avs, there will be a definite step up from a small paysite (soon to die out perhaps) to a full, funded one that can afford to deal with visa.

it woudl really thin out the field in the low to lower mid ranges.
