I seriously need help with blogs, what am i doing wrong? traffic just seems to die

Hey I recently started up a string of blogs recently, all was going well and search traffic was flowly and gradully building nicely. Now yesterday and today it has been almost non-existant.
They were started in december. I submitted to the main blog submit sites. I update every 3 days (custom).
Is it that there is duplicated content on the blogs such as one post will come up with the same content as the janurary category for example? I doubt it.

Could it be I send to many links from the blog submits at once? Goes well for a while then dies? Could that be the reason?
Is it because they are all on the same i.p? (they were not interlinking at all)
Are they just "sandboxed" and will exit later on?
I really have no idea, but it annoys me so much. Any advice for me please?

Are you therefore saying that because they were all started at the same time, google knows that and doesnt like that and stops sending traffic because it seems artificial?

That's the pattern I saw on every blog I ever built. When you're new you land in the top slot on most blog directories, etc. People click. A few weeks later, you're old news and it drops.

They are new. It takes time to build traffic and you are going to see fluctuations. One or two days of no traffic isn't any reason to get worried. You need to look more at monthly averages for now and see if you are still getting a steady increase.

What might be happening is your link is falling off of the "NEW" lists on various places that link to you, and your link is getting buried.

You need to get some solid link trades with other blogs, keep submitting your link to various places, and possibly do some social bookmarking. And of course the myriad of other ways to generate traffic that I'm not going to go into.

Most of all though is age. Your blog will get better in time and all you can do is keep posting and wait.

I think what he's trying to say is that your blogs are still new, you may notice an increase in traffic because you recently submitted to directories which puts your blogs on the top of the list. Try to look for trades to further increase your traffic.

I agree. Dont forget that you want google and yahoo and MSN to send the bots on a regular basis. That means daily updates is better. If you are using Word Press, you can schedule the updates to happen all week long. I have a blog that is set that way. I spend 2 hours making 6 updates every week. then it does the rest. I have another blog that gets about 4 updates a day but they are manual because of current events.

I'm excited to hear that six months is magical. I also heard that the one year mark is fantastic. I'm waiting eagerly with two particular blogs that I want to see succeed.

Yes of course I noticed a surge in traffic once I submitted and understand that it drops off as I move down the list, but that is referral traffic which I am not too bothered about. Its search egine traffic which seems to have dropped

Choose your domain or subdomain name according to your targeted keywords. Don't try to be a jack of all trades.

Make sure you have optimized title tags, they are one of the most important onpage factors.

Make sure you don't have duplicate content because of the archive and categories. Use a plugin like "all in one seo" to do so. If you post alot and every post goes to just one category, feel free to keep categories indexed.

Now let the fun start: Push all low quality links at it first (social bookmarking, blogfarms, linksdumps, etc.). Don't forget some variety in anchor text and add links to subpages as well, not just to the mainpage.

Then it's pinging time, don't let the blog ping, ping the pages that have links pointing to your blog instead, by far more efficient, will get you indexed in 24h.

You will probably rank pretty high for a few days, once the blog hits the sandbox you add quality links (related established sites, blog directories, etc.). Can take a few weeks for it to show up again, sometimes longer, but it's fun to see a site pop up in the top 3 ;)

Important: Check your competition, check their age and backlinks, calculate the number and strength of links you probably need to get ranked where the traffic is. Don't try to pick up a few confused surfers who made it to page 2 of the search results. You are on page one for your main keywords, or you lose. 80% of the surfers won't ever scroll down after searching. If you are on page 3, it's not much different from page 45 or page 200.

Stark, thankyou for the brilliant post.
Quick question for the all one seo plugin, i have installed/activated it. Where abouts in the settings can I turn on the feature that will allow it to block the se's scanning the duplicate pages like categories etc please? Or does it do it automatically?

anywhere from 6-8 month area seems to be the hump at which search engines begin to stablize for my blogs. new blogs seem to get a month or so of love right off the bat from google, then they slide off for a while until they got that 6-8 months behind them. patience clean franck!

No problem. WP has a built in feature that let's you ping different services (pingomatic is often preconfigured, but you can add more) when you update the blog. That's nice, but if you want to speed up the indexing and ranking, you want google to find links TO your site/blog. Let's forget about the blog itself for this technique, it's not about this built in pinger.

You add links to it on your own sites, on social bookmarking sites, you submit to directories, etc. Normally, it would take google quite a time to find those links TO your site, especially if they are on low/zero PR pages that don't get crawled often.

So, you make a list of pages (exact page, not just the domain) linking to you, this includes the social bookmarking site profiles, the pages your link appears on in the directories you submitted to, any page linking TO your blog.

Now you take that list and a desktop based pinging tool (All Day Sucker, BlogPinger Pro, Starpinger, if you don't want to buy one, manual entry in pingomatic is an option as well) and ping each and every URL of that list. It takes barely a minute, often just seconds and googlebot will check the page. It doesn't have to be a blog, you don't even have to ping google blogsearch directly, just one pingomatic ping and googlebot pays the respective a visit. Most of the time, google will spider this page again since the ping indicated there may be something new to grab...and finds the link to your blog.

Cons: Could get your sandboxed very fast

Pros: You'll get indexed faster, especially useful for huge sites to get them completely indexed. You'll get ranked faster. The links can be on orphan pages (=pages not linked from anywhere)

2 ????? just in how many baskets can you put only 2 eggs?

create more blogs, their listings go up and down, some might stay on page one for a very long time but to even things out you need to have more blogs IMO, my granny blogs went to page 300 but my retro porn blog is on page 1, my blog listed for "shemale" dropped off, but a cam sites is on page 1, and so on....

and the formula for blog traffic (once more):
original content + backlinks + time = mo traffic

The problem is internal linking structure... Any default wp install, almost all skins, and seo plugins/skins, do not correctly build/create internal link structure.

This is why people see a fall off after a period of time.

From Dashboard: Write (Write Post) -> Right side where the categories are, down a bit it says "Post Timestamp" -> Change to whatever date/time you want a post to appear -> Publish post and it will be sheduled for publishing at the given date/time, once the date/time is reached, it shows up on your blog. You can shedule an unlimited number of posts. Build in feature, no plugin needed.

Over and out, time to quit working for today.

Another quick question is there a plugin, that allows the urls, to have the titles in them, for example my posts are coming up as:

blog.com.com/?p=6
Anyway it can come up something like
blog.com.com/?p=ass-movies-free-hot-baes

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you can change that in your permalinks. (options/permalinks) I have mine set to name and date based, but you can customize them anyway you want.

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain that. I have used the built in feature, but not done anything like you described.

Much appreciated!

Thanks for all of the great advice guys! I'm just starting a couple of blogs too and need this advice.

By the way, I asked this in a previous post but since this has so many Wordpress people inside I'll give it another shot: When I post in wp 2.2 (other versions haven't worked, don't ask) when I post a word with a ' I get '' and when I edit the post I get ''''. So can't becomes can''t and then can''''. Any ideas?

i think that it just changes ' to '' because ' means something as far as sql statements go. wordpress doesn't post it on the page with '' does it?

Go into options, then permalinks, then add this /%postname%/ to the custom field

Any advice for me please?
i read something recently that sums it up well.

dont "wait" for results. build. keep building and don't look back. results will come.

just keep building and dont stop. time and backlinks are the biggest factors... more important than all the typical "seo" do's and dont's. just build. keep building. through that process you will see patterns of what works, what doesn't and you will learn. stopping at a few sites and then trying to over-analyze everything isn't going to give you any great insights into anything.

I agree with Pleasurepays on this one. I think a lot of people that are new to the biz get mired down trying to figure everything out, when they really need to just keep marching forward. You will learn by doing.
