Are Netflix and BlockBuster sweating today???
"Here's what you can do with Apple TV: rent movies directly on widescreen TV with Apple TV. Rent them in DVD quality, rent them in HD with 5.1" Steve Jobs giving the keynote.

I heard that Microsoft is coming out with something as well for the Xbox360. Blockbuster is sweating hard and so is Hollywood video. They seriously need to lower their rental fees or they are going to be closing alot of stores. Seriously $4 to rent a movie, $7 to rent a game....come on!

I don't think it'll mean their impending doom...
it'll just give them an opportunity to evolve. Personally, I'm a big fan of Netflix. Not sure their selection can be beat. Provided they keep upgrading their "Watch Instantly" Selections, I'm sure I'll be with them for some time.

Stupid question since you can already order vids in HD on the TV and have been able to for a while. It will eat into some market share, but people like the experience of going to the vid store and seeing the covers, getting recommendations, etc. Not to mention the fact that if you have the physical DVD you can copy it while if you stream it you can not.
This appeals to different customers. Asking if this is making Blockbuster sweat is like asking if the local store that rents for $2-$3 less is making them sweat. If you are referring to the mail order shit, that is not their primary source of income. If it were you would see stores closing, and that is not the case. This is merely an attempt at repackaging something that already exists and selling us something we do not need.

Netflix expects to not be mailing movies in a few years, it will be all download or streaming.
I've been renting Netflix for years, but just recently got throttled. On the eight plan, and I guess they don't want you going through that many HD movies a week. |

Yeah we recently upped our plan too, and the movies started taking twice as long to get here. I cut it back to the smallest plan after that.

Netflix also started streaming movies not too long ago. Neither of these companies are stagnant by any means. They'll both be fine.

Apple TV still will require a subscription to a HSD provider, so in reality what's the diffrence in using it vs one of the others'. Only real diffrence is you use a seprate box plugged into a TV, so it's a little easier.

Just do what I do, join a few hollywood unions and get all your movies for free. It's a lot easier and you often get movies while they are still in theaters and you occasionally get some that haven't hit theaters yet. We sometimes get TV shows before the episodes hit TV, as was the case with Dexter and the Sopranos.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Girding for a potential threat from Apple Inc., online DVD rental service Netflix Inc. is lifting its limits on how long most subscribers can watch movies and television shows over high-speed Internet connections. The Associated Press has learned the change will become effective Monday, on the eve of Apple's widely anticipated move into the movie rental industry. Although Apple hasn't confirmed anything yet, Chief Executive Steve Jobs is expected to make it official during a presentation Tuesday in San Francisco. Netflix is gearing up for the increased competition by expanding a year-old feature that streams movies over the Internet instead of making customers wait for their online rental requests to be delivered through the mail. sounds like playboy in the 90's lol. playboy employee: Hey Hef this thing called the internet people can get access to nude pics at home cheap. Hef: Who the hell wants to look at porn on the intent when I have these nice glossy pics you have to get delivered or go out and buy? That turned out well didn't it. As for this its great news for me. I dont do the unlimited cause most movies that come out now are crap i rent maybe one move a month and saving the trip to blockbuster will be nice. For volume people not a big deal but us occasional renters can see an advantage.

Yep, I've been using Amazon Unbox for a while now. Fuck blockbuster and netflix, I'd rather pay $2.99 press a few buttons and see the movie of my choice, at that time, in 15 minutes.
Or how about TV shows. Wait a few years for the show to come out on DVD, or have it automatically downloaded to my PC within hours of it airing on TV, commercial free. That said, its going to be a while until the digital downloads catches up with DVD inventory. Right now Amazon has about 9,000 movies for download but there is a lot of junk in there. Give it another 4 years and its not Netflix+Blockbuster that will be in trouble, but DVD and Bluray. All of physical media is in trouble. |

one thing i hate about apple tv, which has stopped me from buying it, is you have to download to your computer first, then transfer to the box.
with tivo, you can download movies right away from amazon to your tivo box. quality is not HD but sure is a neat feature.

I always thought blockbuster was more of a real estate company financed by movie rentals. Do they not own like prime real estate in all the best shopping centers across the US.
Anyways are not most companies looking at online delivery or video on demand via your cable box?

Last month they sent me an email saying they're raising the price to $34.95 for that plan, so I said, SEE YA. If you're still managing to get that program for $20 then good for you, but for me it was going to cost a good bit more than that.

On my son's 360 I can download movies for $2-$6 depending on age and whether it's HD or not and I have 14 days from the time I download it to watch it. Only after I statr watching it does the 24 hour time limit kick in. With Amazon Unbox I have 30 days from download to watch. 24 hours only after I start watching. Movies are $4 to rent. Only bad part is no HD movies for rent. So I need an AppleTV why? |

1/3 of Ameerican do not have internet. 1/6 only have dial-up. Those numbers aren't dropping by much over the next 10-12 years. So movie studios are going to just give up on 50% of the population? Doubtful. Also 50% of American with broadband only have 2 Mbps connection or less. Gee only will take them 7.5 hours to down the 720p version of Transformers on XBOX Live at 2 Mbps. You need an minimum 10 Mbps to stream and download HD content adn only 5% of Americans have that. Studios aren't sticking millions into blu-ray just to watch it go away in 5 years. Also a DVD you can take anywhere and play into almost anything. Desktop computer, laptop, DVD player, PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360, PS2, Wii, portable DVD player, blu-ray player or HD-DVD player. As long as digital downloads are only available on a specific computer or player, game system or DVR it won't take off. For example you can only download from XBOX Live onto your XBOX Live hard drive and you can only use the 360 to watch it. If your hard drive gets full oh well you have to delete stuff. You can't even transfer stuff to an external hard drive for storage. |

I think Blockbuster and Hollywood video are hurting. In the last five years Blockbuster has seen its stock drop from around $15 a share down to around $3 a share. With more and more things out there to take up people's time stores like Blockbuster have more and more competition and it will only get worse. Now there are so many places to get movies via pay per view that renting them is less attractive to many people. With high speed Internet continuing to roll out, ipods, cell phones that do every thing, video games and cable TV with 200 channels fewer people see a reason to drive to the video store. That said I think DVD sales will stay strong for a long time to come. Some people just like owning the DVD. I don't know why, for 95% of people buying a DVD is a waste of money because they are going to watch it 1-2 times and then it collects dust for years, but people will still buy them. However they may not rent them because it is a hassle driving there and back and maybe getting late fees.
I won't be surprised to see either blockbuster or Hollywood video buy the other chain out in the next 5 years and then downsize the whole operation. |

I doubt that. So how come Apple won't let you play music bought from Itunes on any other MP3 player? Also If I want a DVD it think I'll actually buy the DVD. Just makes sense. Also I doubt you can burn movie rentals on DVD or HD movie purchases.

I thought I read that you get the movies for 30 days but once you start watching them you only got 24 hours to finish them before they are no good.

Already new about Jobs grand speech over a year ago. Funny how he could have FORCED lables to remove DRM but he didn't. Go suck more Jobs cock.

from the cnn.com article regarding apple's new movie service.
"Apple will have more than 1,000 movies for online rental through iTunes by the end of February, with prices of $2.99 for older movies and $3.99 for new releases. Users can watch instantly over a broadband Internet connection, or download and keep the movie for 30 days while having 24 hours to finish the movie once it's started."
