To defrag, or not to defrag?

It is believed that defragmenting all data on a hard disk on a regular basis keeps PCs operating at peak performance on older machines.

So does defragmenting have little to no effect on todays hard disk drives?

Answer to that is run diskeeper on a months trial then run without it for a month.

It's all about the filesystem. NTFS and FAT suck as far as filesystems are concerned and aren't intelligent in how files are placed on the drive. The journaling filesystem under Linux doesn't require defragmenting.

diskkeeper is great, not only does it defragment your drive, but also analyzes which files you use most often and optimizes access time for those files..

You should definitely do it regularly.
As far as I know, it only makes sense if you have enough free disk space on the drive, though.
Otherwise the defrag program will more or less put the data in the same place as before the defragmentation.

Your harddrive doesn't have to look for data all over your drive if you defrag, it will make it stay working longer than it would otherwise. It makes stuff load faster too..

I use O&O defrag, it does defrag my discs automatically.

Namely because there isn't that much to defrag on an OS where your software "choices" become whatever-the-fuck-is-available-for-the-platform...

Did you just suggest running Windows on a Mac so you can defrag an NTFS hard disk, or are you retarded enough to assume that HFS+ magically becomes NTFS when sometime provides pass through access as such?

Fuck, I defrag before each time I play a game. Doesn't take long at all to finish when you do it that often, especially with the defraggin goodness that is known as diskeeper.
