To defrag, or not to defrag?

It is believed that defragmenting all data on a hard disk on a regular basis keeps PCs operating at peak performance on older machines.

So does defragmenting have little to no effect on todays hard disk drives?

VicD 01-14-2008 06:44 PM

I defrag once a year, Watson

Answer to that is run diskeeper on a months trial then run without it for a month.

OK, your sig is tied with Juicy's as the most disgusting images on this board.

Jet - BANNED FOR LIFE 01-14-2008 06:57 PM

Defrag or suffer!

geeknik 01-14-2008 06:59 PM

It's all about the filesystem. NTFS and FAT suck as far as filesystems are concerned and aren't intelligent in how files are placed on the drive. The journaling filesystem under Linux doesn't require defragmenting.

TheSenator 01-14-2008 10:23 PM

Use Diskeeper....

Will keep your disk in top notch condition

CuriousToyBoy 01-14-2008 10:26 PM

Defrag or die.

;-)

woj 01-15-2008 12:15 AM

diskkeeper is great, not only does it defragment your drive, but also analyzes which files you use most often and optimizes access time for those files.. :thumbsup

Violetta 01-15-2008 12:39 AM

I defrag every 6 months or something like that.

blowme_DL 01-15-2008 04:48 AM

defrag!! thats all i can say :)

martinsc 01-15-2008 04:49 AM

i defrag once a month

Davy 01-15-2008 05:33 AM

You should definitely do it regularly.
As far as I know, it only makes sense if you have enough free disk space on the drive, though.
Otherwise the defrag program will more or less put the data in the same place as before the defragmentation.

Emil 01-15-2008 05:53 AM

Your harddrive doesn't have to look for data all over your drive if you defrag, it will make it stay working longer than it would otherwise. It makes stuff load faster too..

I use O&O defrag, it does defrag my discs automatically.

goldmine 01-15-2008 07:25 AM

i defrag every month, or every time i feel that my pc is slowing down.

That is why you disable images on gfy. No one can be trusted here.

tranza 01-15-2008 07:33 AM

I've had this laptop for 2.5 years now, and I've never defragged.....

eMonk 01-15-2008 01:54 PM

hmmm... i don't think diskeeper totally supports 64 bit processors... neither does o&o defrag... :Oh crap

eMonk 01-15-2008 01:56 PM

i'll stick with the one that comes with winxp for now. my next system will not be 64 bit. i'm always running into capability problems.

Namely because there isn't that much to defrag on an OS where your software "choices" become whatever-the-fuck-is-available-for-the-platform...

Not really when there are "options" such as VMware Fusion, Boot Camp, Parallels, Cider etc etc ....

Did you just suggest running Windows on a Mac so you can defrag an NTFS hard disk, or are you retarded enough to assume that HFS+ magically becomes NTFS when sometime provides pass through access as such?

dav3 01-15-2008 05:04 PM

another bump for Diskeeper

sltr 01-15-2008 05:10 PM

man, i dl'd diskeeper and installed it based on all the good comments here and it shows the computer i installed it on- 1a327d77- whatever, but when i click on it to scan it says no computer installed, diskeeper not installed.

ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

VeriSexy 01-15-2008 06:11 PM

It'd a waste of time... don't notice the difference

eMonk 01-15-2008 06:51 PM

ok, i found a 64 bit version of diskeeper. :)

Agreed for thiis sig, it's highly disgusting ... :321GFY

NinjaSteve 01-17-2008 02:06 AM

Why would a person not defrag? Click, go to bed, wake up, done.

Gordon G 01-17-2008 04:58 AM

once per month here.

dav3 01-17-2008 05:05 AM

Fuck, I defrag before each time I play a game. Doesn't take long at all to finish when you do it that often, especially with the defraggin goodness that is known as diskeeper.

cranki 01-17-2008 05:10 AM

I've used O&O defrag in the past, has any of you diskkeeper users used it as well and can give a comparison?

cranki 01-18-2008 03:16 AM

I'm running o&o now and apparently I got a 86% degree of fragmentation... wonder if my system will be faster afterwards...
