How long do they hold the name?
they will hold it for 5 days and then toss it back into the pool.

the more interesting question is does network solutions pay the $0.25 ICANN fee for that tasting? If so, wouldn't take long for skript kiddies to load up NS LOL

No way do they pay it. The regular searches alone would cost a bundle and cost cutting corps would see these charges as somethign to get rid of.

Just got word that there is no ICANN fee for tasting.. the $0.20 (not $0.25) is a proposal to supposedly curb the domain tasting.

lots of chatter going on here:

Ahah... the crooks are at it again

This latest ploy may be new, but operating like scum is not unfamiliar to NS. The history and backroom antics there is just awesome - tho that's obviously a tiny fraction which is known about.

Couple of years back an LE agency friend was "playing games" with NS - purchasing domains, causing queries then asking questions etc etc. The feedback from that game was too damned funny - even to the level of sending clients to public call box numbers for "support" *lol*

It was more than obvious things were not as things supposed to be

The "shock" is that while some registries were suspected of doing such things, there was never any clear proof.

Network Solutions is quite brazzen as its easy to confirm now what they are doing.

How the hell can they get away with this?

why would anyone want to pay such a high price at NS?????

yes, happens in under a minute if the domain has dictionary keywords. Put in garbage and it doesn't register it.

Guess the domain scams and schemes are getting bolder.

After you "search" for a domain at NS, open it up in a browser in a few minutes.. they have it running as a parked page.

Had to do the test as well.

yup the free registration thing has been exploited faster than it was a documented feature.. but can't really blame NS on this one.... doesnt matter if you register it there or another registrar, NS still gets $6.50 a domain
regardless who registers it.

yes, but i think you missed the point of the hijaacking of the searched domain... you can ONLY get the domain from them for $34.95/yr

You can't go anywhere else to get it cheaper, because they have it locked for 5 days.

so the obvious solution is don't use NS for your lookups....

Lookup a bunch of domains with trademarks and report them to various companies.

I had looked up this domain http://stealthisdomainfromme.com/ this morning, and sure enough, it got registered and then a parked page was there.. full promo of NS.

Now, it has an 'under construction' page. There used to be a link at the bottom where they were trying to throw off an trademark issues, but i guess with all the attention, their attorneys probably warned them to not put up any "parked" pages other than the "This Site Is Under Construction and Coming Soon."

This isn't surprising. I knew a guy from Houston who allegedly had an inside source at Network Solutions back in the late 90s. The way their little scam worked allegedly was that every two and three letter domain name that existed would get registered to a front company and then resold for top dollar. When the grace period ended (something like 60 or 90 days) then the insider would re-register the domains for the front company again.

Then there was the time NetSol wanted to circumvent any mistyped URL request on the internet and, instead of presenting a DNS error, they would show a netsol page advertising themselves. They're always looking for ways to make a buck. You think they made coin when they were charged $100 for a fucking two year domain registration back in 1994? Hells yes they did.
